The Xbox 360? Looks like it…

Until Microsoft makes their official announcement on it, this one is still firmly in the rumor category, but we’ve gotten word from one of our trusted sources that Microsoft has pretty much settled on a name for the next Xbox: the Xbox 360 (let that sink in for a moment, because you’re probably going to be hearing it a lot for the next several years).
Our source, who has worked on several projects involving the Xbox and the Xbox 360, has seen the proposed packaging and other design elements for the new console, and says that as of right now the console is being branded as the “Xbox 360â€.
That’s definitely not that first time we’ve heard that mentioned as one of the possible names for the next-generation Xbox; last year a marketing firm conducted a survey where they asked people whether they thought Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5 sounded more “next-gen†(apparently Microsoft was worried that calling their new console the “Xbox 2†would make it seem older or less “cutting-edge†than the PlayStation 3).

NIntendo "Revolution" and now xbox 360.
 
Egads, that's lame.

Unless their marketing people have already cooked up a slew of great campaigns that give momentous meaning to "360," I'm both surprised and underwhelmed.

A name is a real opportunity to position your product in consumers' minds. When I hear "360," I think of a half-assed snowboarder who can't pull a 720 or 1080.

Wonder what would that "360" indicate? Something related to the technology, some control method...?
Or are they just trying to say they've come a full circle... though I don't know how :? .... Microsoft's "Revolution" ? Microsoft and Nintendo really one same console.... NIntendo "21" as was rumoured some time ago... "21"... two in one.... xbox and nintendo in one ! (Relax, I don't believe that myself either :LOL: )
 
Of the original names leaked from the market research last June I liked Xbox HD and Xbox 360 the most. Either one will be fine with me, but I've been growing to like Xbox 360. I think it's kind of devious. Consider this possibility...

Well I'm not sure if it would work like that.
People do know it goes like: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, .............360, 361, 362, 362, 364....

I don't think they'll see "360" and "3" as something equal, less or more, they'll just think of them as different numbers.
They'll know the "3" in PS3 is "third of series", and they'll know "360" in Xbox 360 does not mean its "360th" in series.
Maybe subconsiously they might think 360 is "better" and "more" than 3, but as the consoles aren't bought, or thought like as a loaf of bread, that really has minimal effect.

But if MS puts it something like this: xbox 360, maybe then they'll be able to fool enough people ;)

Seriously, if they think they'll have to compete with bigger model number, I don't think it shows a lot of confidence in their own brand.
IMO they should just fearlessly go for xbox 2, that would be the best, least confusing choise if you want to strengthen the xbox as a brand, and differentiate it from PlayStation (do they want that, is a different matter altogether...)
 
It might have something to do with surround.
Surround sound, they had that this gen, but perhaps it is some enhanced surround sound.
Or "surround" as in that you'll be so immersed in the vibrant gameworld, that you'll feel like being surrounded by that world.....hmm.. .. that sounds a bit silly and "made up" :)

I remember there was some onlie poll askin what of the options would be best for next xbox name. Maybe they just took what got the best results, silly them.

Never make marketing decisions based on polls. Look what happened with the xbox exterior design ;)
 
To begin with the name xbox is not all the cool sounding. It doesn't have that je ne sai qua cool sound to it. Then again, has Microsoft come out with a stlyish product? Not one that I can think up.

Xbox 360! I can only imagine how thing will look.

Anyway, first thing I thought once I heard "xbox 360" was, 'uhm, so it'll be round now or what? Umm, waitaminute...box...round... No, that doesn't make sense.'

Really, it doesn't make sense. I'd rather see xbox hd or somesuch instead, though I wouldn't be surprised if the lawyers at Harley-Davidson might want a word with Bill Gates if they go that route. They always claim "customer confusion" in those kind of situations... :LOL:
