Nokia N93 - first Nokia with HW accelerator

I think I noticed the N93 in the Transformers movie, given a little cameo with some impressive exposure.

I think it was the newer N93i - minor correction.
Same hw, newer sw, fancier mirror cover and touch pad -like buttons.
Personally I still use the original N93 :D

Let´s just put it this way: why would we deliberately limit ourselves in using just one hw vendor, giving them all the control and basically freedom to dictate the core price and terms. Since we have this great standard for abstracting hardware, why not utilizing that.
Minimizing fragmentation, maximising hw options..

Well, currently, the only Nokia phones that have 3D hw accelerators are
N93, N93i, N95 (all variants), E90 and the N82. All of these 6-8phones have the Omap2420 SoC with PowerVR MBX +VGP. My guess is, these phones will remain to be the only OpenGL ES 1.1 compliant phones, since nowadays most SoC's have OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible chips. My question is, why hasn't Nokia decided to expose those vendor specific gl_extensions when there isn't even one Nokia phone with a different GPU configuration? The N96 and N85, which are probably the new high end Nseries phones, don't have 3D hw accelerators either. So does that mean we can expect a new Nokia flagship with a hw accelerator from a vendor other than IMG? Even if there will be one and the chip is ES 2.0, then why not expose those extensions for the omap2420 phones since they're ES 1.1 (or are they?)?

PS Sorry for revivng this very old thread.

Hey this forum section (handheld tech) has little activity as it is. Besides this thread is only a year old :p

Well best guess is OMAP3430 is around the corner, lets have this debate in a couple of months and see where Nokia are heading, but given the market strength of PowerVR I'd be very surprised if Nokia have taken another route, but then again the decisions they have taken in 2008 with handset introductions have been strange to say the least.

Finally, an OMAP2430 device gets rated by GLBenchmark with the inclusion of the innov8.

An updated score has been listed for the N95 8GB, and it's now moved ahead and pulled away as the most powerful device.

Don't think the score really matters for the n82s/n93s/n95s or samsung's s60 devices as hardware rarely gets utilized.

Iphone's score doesn't matter either as right now as its like a fixed console platform.
