Nobody should buy a 360 ever.

Just like the 360 owners i plan on buying a 2nd PS3, mine is the original EU PS3 as well, i would like to save it so i can pull it out in 10 years and have a PS3 with PS2 support. The thing is that i am not buying until there is a real new PS3 version out, with less power requirement.
 
Dodgy hardware

I think it is about time for my anecdote:

Bought an Xbox360 December 24th - two weeks later returned it for another model as it was locking up in that Lego Indiana Jones game. I got a relatively new model as a replacement and "good will gesture" but it did make me wonder how long I had til this new Xbox360 gave up the ghost.

Played Forza 2 on it for a while and when I had almost finished it, (tried a few other games but got bored), I sold it to a friend.

Probably will bur another Xbox 360 when Forza 3 comes out unless the PS3 totally drops in price and GT5 is awesome(r) than F3.. :cool:

With the money from the Xbox360 sale I bought a Radeon 4870 instead.
 
None of which mean anything. The chassis strength is no indicator of component robustness. You could have a weapons-grade titanium case that's bulletproof and repells all physical assaults flawlessly, but chips that fry after 6 months use due to inadequate cooling. Consoles aren't designed or built to survive that sort of abuse. One could even argue that a system that was strong enough to survive was overengineered, adding cost that was unnecessary.

To be fair, the console that won that test was the cheapest.

My personal experience with game systems has been decent. No real issues with any of my systems, however I've had many friends bring me dead PS2's and Xbox's to work on. From current generation, I've been brought 1 dead PS3, no 360's(only know 1 person that has one though).

My almost 25 year old NES still runs like a champ though. I had to replace the cartridge slot because my younger brother broke a pin on it once, but replacing the slot is easy, and restores it to good-as-new condition.

Whats the chance ANY 360's or PS3's run in 25 years?
 
Heh, it's a good thing we don't use anecdotal evidence from B3D members to form failure numbers. As I'm seeing more PS3 failures in this thread than X360 failures. :)

I think everyone here knows that the 360 failure rate is simply terrible anyone who thinks othrwise is in denial. That said, as long as you know the risks and are aware of the waranty details i dont think you should be getting up in arms about it. The only people whou should be up in arms are those that bought the console without the knowledge of these risks.

Thing is outside of the interwebs im not sure how well educated people are about these things. I know several 360 owners that got rrod but had never heard of any sort of extended waranty i can only imagine how many ppl out there are in the same position. Its these people i feel sorry for, especially when you tell them about the waranty after they have already gone out and paid for a replacement! :smile:
 
What hardware model of Elite do you have? It's likely a pre - Falcon model. The Falcon model substantially improved reliability. The newest model, Jasper, is even better.

I bought it May 2008. So it was a $450 purchase that lasted for thirteen months.

That's not acceptable by anybody's standards. If you've read any of my other comments, I've been fully supportive of MS in the past. INCLUDING what I believed to be their strategy of shipping inferior consoles EARLY in order to get to market first.

But the Elite's weren't first to market, and I certainly believed by May 2008 the original issues would have been corrected.

But you aren't out any money. You're getting one free from MS. All you've lost is a few weeks of play time and Netflix.

I don't feel sorry for anybody that spends hundreds of dollars to replace something without checking their warranty first. I mean, the first thing I do is check the warranty, even if its a long shot, because I don't want to spend any money I don't have to.
 
How much does MS charge when your warrenty expires? Mines is a launch unit and it broke down recently. I'm in no hurry to fix it.

That's the only 'BONUS' to the entire situation. MS's customer service was excellent.

They asked me for my name and address, (because somehow my console wasn't registered even though I've got a LIVE account that is linked to my console), and an email address to send the shipping label to (that I still haven't gotten), the serial number and that was it.

I kept the original box and the receipt from Best Buy just in case, but they didn't ask for proof of purchase or purchase date or anything.

So there was no arguing there was no need to talk to supervisors or anything. They pretty much just said 'OK, we can mail you a shipping label or email it to you to get it to you quicker, we'll fix it and send it back'.

As far as that goes, it was handled very well.

The problem is that they'd get points for doing that 38 or 46 months after I bought the console. Not THIRTEEN.

Thirteen months in, I don't care how willing you are to 'correct' the issue. IT shouldn't have happened in the first place, you'd better fix the console and give me free live memberships or something else to make up for it.

Hell, when my EVA video card died, they SENT ME A NEW ONE with a box to return the BROKEN one to them.

MS should give me a number, let me go back to best buy, pick up another unit and give them the number, be charged nothing and drop off my broken unit to them and let them deal with it.

THAT would be better.

Or, they could have just made a console that didn't break after 13 months to begin with.
 
My thinking here being if you really want a 360, but won't buy one because you may find yourself unable to play it for a couple of weeks at some point, how are you in a better situation by not buying it and therefore not being able to play it at all?

That line of thinking is only logical if the 360 were the only method of receiving that entertainment value. In this case, the PS3 is available and offers the gaming experience, or if it were about streaming video that are various other companies (such as Roku) that offer the ability to stream Netflix.

To say that I should be happy because I got 13 months of use out of the 360 that I wouldn't have had if I hadn't purchased the 360 seems absurd to me.

I could have purchased a PS3, or a Wii and a Roku box, or any number of other options.

I visited my parents 2 years ago and I found my Atari 2600 and I hooked it up to the TV and while the experience demonstrated that nostalgia should be left alone, IT WORKED.

The warant that came with xbox360s was for a year. Nowhere did it state the details of 3 year warranty, how could it when it was intoduced at a later date. Is the average person expected to predict that the hardware was so bad that a warranty extension had to be enforced to stop legal action? Im not aware of any othey piece of hardware i have ever owned do this so why would i expect any different with a 360 when i have the written warranty details in ink in front of me stating clearly what i am entitled to.
 
Send it off ASAP & hopefully when it gets back, which should be less than a week, we can play Halo3, 1vs100 or whatever. I'll make it up to you & let you win. It will be a blast I promise! ;)

A week wouldn't be too bad, but that's not what they said. There's also no way for them to fix my console and send it back that quickly so if I do get a console back that quickly it won't be the one I sent in. Which means they should have just given me the opportunity to go to the store to get a new one and turn in my old one without all the other hassle.

The thing is, if I thought I was just buying a video game system I wouldn't have even bought it to begin with. Losing my ability to play video games isn't the main issue. It's losing my ability to stream movies to my TV that is.

It's one thing if your Wii breaks. Oh NO! No video games until it's fixed. That's different than when the 360 breaks and you can't play video games OR watch movies.

I'm paying for services that I'm not receiving, not including the fact that when you purchase something that is to perform a service you count on that service to be provided.

Hell, when my car breaks down, I get provided with ANOTHER CAR that instant while they fix the car that is broken and return it to me so I'm not out a car.

Yes, and if I remember correctly you'll get either a 1 or 3 month Live Gold card when you get your console back.

So the money lost to lost game time will be reimbursed and then some.

So you're out like $7-15 depending on how long it takes to get back?

I wish I had that kind of service when my car breaks down. I can get a free shuttle to and from work, but that's it.
