Nintendo DS: The London Event

Here's a nice article from Cube-Europe.com reporting on a recent London event...

There's a nice link to a video of Metroid Prime: Hunters... 8)

I must admit that since the dust has settled from E3, the DS is growing on me and really doesn't look as bad as some first impressions have suggsted. 8)

i just wish there was better filtering. Though i think the ds will be a good cross between graphics and battery life

I think (and hope) the difference of technical capabilities between DS and PSP will reflect into the price difference.

The small low-res screen, coupled with the high-res textures DS is capable of, bilinear wouldn’t be very noticeable.

I don't know . it blurs so much and looks bad in the videos . I don't know if its because they are blown up or not

Uh, "high-res textures"?

Sorry, don't see where that's coming from.
Take a look at some of the MP: Hunters screens, and tell me that isn't high-res textures, for a device such as DS: http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/dsmetroidprimehunters/screenindex.html
It's definitely better than anything N64 was ever capable of, with its 1Kb texture cache. Maybe it's that not having bilinear increases the fillrate and die-space for SRAM?

these aren't high res textures. i'm sorry but that's what i feel it is.
those screens remind of the alien breed 3d on my old amiga back in the day (all 2d fake 3de engine ) running on a 16mhz 680020 motorola procesor.

Are you referring to Hi-res relative to the DS screen resolution? I still can't see any Hi-res textures in any of the MP Hunters screen shots? :? To me they look like PS1 quality textures...

Also I take your point on filtering not being that effective on such a low resolution screen (can't remember the res off the top of my head?) but surely bilinear will effectively sharpen those images and give a perceived higher res? IMO, Nintendo should've integrated the MBX chipset to the ARMs. :?

There is a ~ 1:1 texel to pixel ratio, that's all I'm saying.
It's difficult to judge the actual size of textures, you can only observe the texel density, and in this case it's pretty high. Certainly higher than most N64 or Playstation games..

You can't actually be serious here??

I can see what Squeak means. Of course the textures aren't high res like XBox/GC ect. But at times they look very high res compared to N64.

Well, what i don't understand is why comparing DS texturing capabilities to N64's?

If DS textures capabilities has to be compared to something, it has to a portable device, say imgtec's MBX, Ati's Imageon, Sony's PSP... And therefore it's hard (at least for me, of course) to call DS's textures High-rez.

This is a machine with similar technical attributes to N64 and we're discussing wether it should have the bilinear filtering that N64 had. That's why its texture resolution is being compared to N64's..

In regard to performance? Maybe, even if, i personally think it's more close to PS1 than N64 (The point filtering hardware renderer is main common point between those two)

And if you mean the similarities are in theirs hardware architectures, then that will puzzle my mind, since there's, imho, almost no similiraties between N64 hardware and DS's (with what we know about DS, OC).

OT, personaly, the only links i see between N64/DS is Nintendo and Mario 64.

edit: Anyway, my point was that, imho, one can't say that DS is capable of high rez textures because they compare favorably with N64's.
DS has to be compared with other portables devices before doing such claims...
But that's just me, so don't pay attention. :D

yes I admit, I exagerated a bit... but then again.. ;)
