Nintendo 3DS business/general talk *spin-off feat. 3DS as a P.I. in New Orleans

you don't need that for hdmi , you need that for multi channel sound with older xbox and older hardware.

I never said everyone needed it, but MANY people needed it because at the time that HDMI equipped Xbox arrived that was the only way to get multi-channel digital audio without having to rebuy a brand new receiver.

The breakout box only came included with the elites of the time .

The HDMI audio dongle came out when they released the new Pros with HDMI out and it retailed for $50.

The $30 cable from apple doesn't allow the use ot tos or even composite cables for multi channel sound

Maybe that's why it's not $50.

Portable game sales or the entire games sector? Do NDP even track mobile phone game sales?

Heck the 2009 graph only includes iOS, 2010 graph adds android so skews the whole thing straight away.

Regardless, i dont dissagree with anyones opinions im simply saying all those charts show is market share. They cant be used one their own to show anything else.

"According to leading market research company, The NPD Group, the preliminary estimate* for total consumer spend on gaming content via all monetization methods, including new physical video and PC games, used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile game apps, is between $15.4 to $15.6 billion. This total consumer spend on games content in 2010 represent sales that are flat to down by as much as 1 percent when compared to 2009."

So thats a no then its talking about they whole videogame industry including games on social networking sites, the portable/mobile sector could have grown even if the entire industry as a whole didnt.

DS software sales (units) were about 10% down in 2010 vs 2009 in NA, atleast from april 1st to the end of december' so only nine months covered in both years, but I don't think that skews things either way.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2011/110127e.pdf

Nintendo had a tough year, Wii hardware down, but software sales still pretty good. The DS took a big hit in both, NA and worldwide.

Marketshare is also already alone pretty important, if everybody grows but you, you'll become the food.

Is that 10% attributed to the advent of phone gameing or is it a natural downturn though? And while market share is important, how important it is depends on how much the actual market itself. How much is direct competition and how much can they co-exist? Only a percentage of the potential phone game buying market are also part of the potential DS game buying market, and for those that are in both how has their purchasing habbits changed? The question is how much effect is the phone gaming segment having on nintendo, its a given that it will have some effect.

Take similar stats and apply it to the console market vs social media site gaming. We will see social media gameing gaining market share steadily, but what does this actually say about the effect its having on the console industry?

A lot of the info we need to answer these questions we will never have so im all for differing opinions and people putting there own analysis of the info we have across. Its just a pet hate of mine when charts and statistics are shown off as a diffinative answer to a question when the information they actually provide is limited.

You act we are not privy here at B3D to additional information. I don't look at this data chart in isolation because I don't have to look at in such fashion. We peruse NPD data monthly and plethora of data from other sources. The general outlook is that DS's and PSP's US hardware and software have been down YOY over 2010 and is supported by plenty of data.

So, I don't see the point in stating that "the portable/mobile sector could have grown even if the entire industry as a whole didnt" when not given more comprehensive data by those charts. I'm already privy to that infomation stating the contrary.

Here is the rest of the study for those charts

Now I do agree with you that you can't strictly say mobile gaming is totally cannibalizing handheld sales. A natural downturn has to be involved in some form of fashion.

I dont dispute the portable consoles have had a downturn, i said as much ealier. When i said portable/mobile market, i meant portable consoles, mobile phones etc market as a whole could have grown not the portable consoles alone. I simply mean that if iOS is particularly successful and grows its own as well as the entire mobile market it doesnt mean its at the expense of nintendo, as you agree with in your edit.

Its not the same as other markets like say laptops where products are interchangeable, where a sale of a particular brand is a lost sale to the other. In markets like mobile gaming products differ enough not to be interchangable and market share becomes a lot less important.

Yes. It's not market share that matters, but market size. Although that's really true of every business, but humanity's nature means everything is considered a competition for a winner based on relative performances. 80% market share is considered good, even if the worldwide market for ugly alien garden gnomes is only $50 a year. Whereas only 10% of a $10 billion market makes you a loser.

Nintendo Airing 3D TV On Japanese 3DS System Tomorrow:

Have a Japan region Nintendo 3DS? Leave it on tomorrow and you’ll automatically download 3D TV shows from Nippon Television and Fuji TV via Spotpass. Both broadcasters are making 3D TV shows for Nintendo’s handheld. Here’s a look at what’s on the schedule:

...

While Japan has idol wrestling, North American 3DS owners will be able to watch Netflix on the go this summer.

The list of shows is small now but I laughed when I saw the daily Idol sumo wrestling.

Whatever happened to Shawn the Sheep on 3ds? I remember Nintendo making a big deal of it at a press conference in Amsterdam earlier this year.

Depending on your choice of sales tracking firm, Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D was either the best selling or second best selling game last week. Regardless, the remake of the Nintendo 64 classic gave 3DS a much needed boost, propelling Nintendo's new hardware ahead of the PSP for the first time in twelve weeks.

...

3DS benefitted more from the major release, as hardware sales surged from last week's 24,649 units to 40,649 units. PSP saw a modest hardware boost from 26,681 units to 31,741 units.

...

Zelda may have been supply constrained. In advance of the game's release, retailers reported a low initial shipment. Media Create and ASCII usually provide sell-through rate information in their Friday sales reports, so we should get a better idea of the situation then.

...

Link has details about the interesting sales week.

I think games like The Mercenaries 3d or RE Revelations definitely look noticeably better than PSP games, so I'd say yes, it is probably a more powerful device.

The PICA200 is certainly more advanced than the PSP's GPU, at least regarding (fixed-function) shading techniques.
But as far as I can tell, when you take away the stereoscopic ability, it's a little bit like comparing a Radeon 9200 to a Radeon 7500 -> Unless the developers start taking advantage of the added functionality, it won't get much better visuals.

For example, most 3DS titles are IMO well behind both God of War titles for PSP.

I'll agree and say that "most" titles are a bit lackluster, but there are a handful, like the RE games, that push the hardware a lot harder, and it's nice to see examples of what the system is really capable of. Hopefully the other devs will figure that out over the next couple of years. Especially since I actually own a 3DS, I don't normally buy handhelds.. hehe.

It's back to being outsold by the PSP. Nintendo should see this as a clear message to drop the price of the console before the PSV arrives. While Zelda is great software I don't feel the need to purchase the console at its current price to replay it. That and the 3D on this thing is actually pretty terrible, so the markup to $250 seems even more egregious.

The way the big three continue to ignore and forget both their own and their competitors screw-ups as soon as they are at the top is both sad and entertaining. I'm really hoping Nintendo's arrogance is gonna bite the company in the ass. The sooner the better. Worked wonders for Sony (at least it was great for the Sony supporters).

I have no idea how much a DS costs these days. Perhaps if they price it "too low", it may cannibalize DS (All the SKUs) sales ? They have a lot of DS inventory in the channel right ?

Nintendo management should be able to steer their strategy at will. Perhaps waiting for 3DS content + services, and observing DS channel inventory first.

The PS3 case is different because Sony was already selling at a loss. They couldn't afford or didn't want to drop it lower, although they did cut the PS3 launch price in Japan quickly.
