Next Gen? Why Reinvent the Wheel?

What the hell is a "real DX10 rig" though? The $900 price included it, not sure how you're going to go much higher than the 8800GTS anyway (640MB was in the build BTW). Frankly I don't see DX10, I need solid performance and want to play games. It doesn't make me feel superior knowing I'm running Very High and my neighbors running only Medium... Personally if it was between $600 and $3,000 to play the same game besides visuals I know I'd go with $600 EVERY time.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just adding my opinion. There is no use getting a stripped down DX10 GPU if it cannot handle the games in the near future. I'm thinking of games like Crysis. I think $600 is a little low for a gaming rig, but under $1000 will build a nice rig. The video card is the most import part, skimp on the CPU if you have too, but not the GPU.

$600 might build a computer that can play games, but it won't be a gaming rig.

My rig feels sad, and I still extremely disagree with you. A gaming rig is one designed to play games, a rig that has a decent graphics card (I consider X1950 Pro and above decent, which is what I have). But according to your logic the day the Geforce 8 series appeared all Geforce 7 and X1K series cards are not gaming cards... Maybe you haven't been giving much time to pricing lately, but $90 will buy you 2GB of memory, $80 a dual core A64, $90 a large and fast hard drive.

I only have a 7900GT

I was talking about building a rig that will compete with consoles for at least 2-3 years. Buying a cheaper GPU is fine, but you have to upgrade it sooner. Of course if you only game on a 1280x1024 LCD you can get away with a cheaper video card, but 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 is getting pretty common and add in 2x-4x FSAA you will have a hard time playing new games at the native res.

I just threw together some parts at Newegg and it came to about $780 before tax/shipping with a 8800GTS 640MB. So $600 is reasonable with lower screen res (say 720P like most console games). I prefer my PC to exceed my console IQ though :D

No.

$900~ will buy you a great gaming rig (that includes CPU, Motherboard, memory, hard drive, video card, power supply, case) that has such powerful parts as a 8800GTS included into the build cost, high quality PSU like the Corsair 620W, and then power saving components like a A64 X2 3800+ 65W and great OCing motherboard in a Biostar TForce. This idea that $1500 is needed is just out right crazy. I could rebuild my entire rig now (which I find still great for gaming) for around $600.

No no no. You dont want an A64X2 3800+ .

Get a E6400 Conroe, and OC it to 3.6ghz :D

Lol, aint that the reason for playing on a PC, mods, addons and better sound/graphics?... of course it is!

Also remember that a TV (LCD/plasma) aint free and they cost like a high-end PC with a monitor!

I have my PC hooked up to the same 1080P 42" LCD as my 360 and PS3. No more desk, no more seperate TV and monitor, one display to rule them all.
