New Xbox 360s include HDMI

That depends on what you were looking for when you bought one. I'm thinking about buying one soon and I can say that I won't be looking at ones without it.

Well, obviously. My next one will have HDMI too. But I don't buy an amp that often. My current one dates from 1992 (first affordable Surround one, and Pro-Logic still sounds pretty decent). If I'd bought an optical capable one not too long ago, I wouldn't be too happy about this. They did this last time too, while the PS2 even then already had an optical out built in by default.

Why is this such a big deal? I really don't like it. Eventually there's going to be a game that makes me want a 360 and eventually the 360 will get quiet enough for my tastes, and by that time, I'd like this nonsense to be over. If not, then they're lucky that I'll want a new receiver eventually, but it won't happen in another year at least.

Right now my TV takes good care of things. It accepts 5.1 over HDMI, and can convert it to Pro-Logic II which I send to my amp using standard red/white stereo plugs. The only nag I have about it is that I need the TV to be on, but I don't miss that too often (mostly just when playing music, in which case having the TV on is a waste of power). But it's useful as long as I don't have an HDMI amp. And those things are pretty expensive still too.

Eh? From what I can see, in your case you would either have a new amp, or would use it as audio back from the TV, or just use two channel RCA connectors for Pro-Logic...?

Don't pretty much all HDMI-enabled TV's have optical out? Wouldn't this serve the exact same purpose as having the optical out on your 360?

Also, does the package still include the advanced A/V cable? This has an optical out integrated. If so, and both outputs (A/V port and HDMI port) are active simultaneously you can just connect both an HDMI cable and the included A/V cable and use the optical connector on the A/V cable for digital audio.

Yes, and I believe for exactly that reason.

So, excuse my ignorance, but why the bitching?

Hell if I know! :D

That's how I'd use it as my receiver doesn't support HDMI.

BTW, here's the dongle that allows you to use optical or RCA audio out while using HDMI.

Ironically, it's ignorance which is thesource of the bitching.

Anyone who's even SEEN a 360 HDAV cable, should now that you can simply run your optical chord from there.

I said that back in post #16, unless I am miss understanding the discussion.

The problem is that you apparently cannot plug in the original 360 HD AV cable and the HDMI cable at the same time, because they won't fit simultaneously - Hence why the Elite came with the additional dongle.

Therefore, people who want to use the HDMI output on the new premium consoles will need to fork out for the new dongle/HDMI cable kit, to the tune of $50.

If that is true there is zero point buying HDMI Premiums if he will output visuals from HDMI and sound from A/V port. Only $50 between elite and premium

Well.. Zero point unless you don'tt like the color black I suppose. The light beige/cream white 360 will look dust-free a bit longer than a black unit.
Peace.

Uhh... Premium is $349 and Elite is $449 :p

I was saying that if you buy Premium 360 with HDMI for this purpose

- HDMI for visual output
- A/V for audio output

and Sodoff up there says you need a audio dongle when you use a 360, you have to buy that $50 thing, so there is my justifications. ;)

There hasn't been any reports on that dongle being required to use the digital optical connection with a HDMI connection. Considering that the dongle isn't available for purchase separately(at any price), I would assume it's not required and it was only included in the Elite SKU as a convienience.
