New World Airforce Pics (Xbox360)

I don't think that this game looks that good. But I don't really play these kind of game so. What do you guys think?

I think i'ma hold out what the AC team has in store for next-gen. I've seen and played some of Taito's previous flight games, and they were not impressive. Let's just hope Namco could get their network running next time around.

BTW, this game is confirmed as playable next week. We should get more solid details, and how it plays.

I think the lighting took a major dive. Next generation I expect lighting in flight simulator games to approach global illumination quality. There is really no excuse for this kind of flat lighting.

As I've said before, Flight Sims should look photorealistic. There's so little going on you can blow pretty much your entire poly budget and shader budget on the few planes in view, and go all out for nice shadows etc. when landed. These pics are very disappointing as a result (though the scenery pics look nice)

Both scenery and plain textures look crap! all flat and grayish (where's the bump mapping to give some detail to those plain edges&joints & some pretty shadders on those afterburners?)
Not to talk about some trees on the ground or BUILDINGS.

maybe those are still pics from the alpha kit.
Even so, a 9800 dedicated to producing two planes in the sky ought to produce some impressive stills, without caring about a high frame rate. If on Alpha kits they were aiming for 30fps and cut down the visuals to suit, they were wasting their time!

My favorite flight simulator is F/A 18 Interceptor on the Amiga by Bob Dinnerman. All the fancy graphics are fine, but I want a flight sim thats as fun as F/A 18 and has the sense of speed that game conveys. Counter Strike achieved the same thing for the first person shooter genre. A simply fun game with a sense of kinetic energy while moving around in a combat enviroment.

Of course a game should use all available processing power to create the prettiest graphics possible, but to judge a flight sim based on graphics is missing the whole point of what a flight sim is.

The game engine has to be able to display a dozen or more planes, plus a huge amount of terrain all at once. That's not a very easy thing to do.

What I'm more interested in is the gameplay. For the life of me I cannot understand the popularity of the Ace Combat series, since it is so unlike actual flying. I hope this game is closer to a sim, and less like an arcade game.

I enjoy the Ace Combat/Air Force Delta type games. I'll reserve judgement on the visuals of this game until next month when it should much closer to completion. As Powderkeg said some more gameplay footage would be nice to see also.

I think the first four pics are pretty impressive. No AA and very detailed.

onda, those pics are scaled down from way higher resolutions, and as such they should not exibit any noticeable aliasing (it's 'aliasing', btw, not 'aa').

otherwise i find the level of detail and shading decent if they're aiming for a stable 60fps.
