new vs old

well, here is question.

how would the overal power compare between
a supersized ps 2 and a nextgen console (prob xbox2, ps3..)

what i mean is, can't they get the VU's and emotion engine and i don't know what not to 3GIGaherts for example and expand the memory to tenfold?
so simply said, crank up current technology 10fold...

isn't that easyer to do then completely rework everything ?
or am I talking and thinking total crap here?

or maybe that's what's making new (g)cpu's about?

*cpu/cpu technology isn't really my domain so don't shoot mé

Oh boy! Your really bored, aren't ya?

You know, the forum was shut down because of posts like this. :?

Simply bumping clock speed by [a-really-big-figure] isn't going to be very practical, other things need to change too. That's why you see Intel etc modify their CPU cores by adding more cache, tweaking stuff, faster bus speed, do dual memory channels etc.

Sure a 3GHz EE with 320MB RAM (which would be a really odd number) would beat a PS2 hands-down, but it wouldn't touch a system engineered for 3GHz speed from the ground up.

>... a pussy a day keeps da docto away.!..

More likely to give you a venereal disease, which would prompt you a visit to aforementioned doctor before your weenie drops off!

what? Sony needs their design to be more programmer friendly from the information that I have read.........the emotion engine as it is currently implimented is NOT programmer friendly.

It would be easier to crank the EE to 3Ghz, add more cache, rework the internals of the VU's to add more functions along with more system memory.

However, you get nowhere near the performance that you would get if you developed a CPU and GPU from scratch what is what Sony does.

It's easier, just that Sony wants more power than just a souped up PS2. And from the investments we see in PS3 tech, they really want some massive power.

What do you think PS3 is ?

Just look at Sony demonstration of GSCube, it uses SGI Origin 3000 Series as Broadband Server. So what PS3 uses the similar concept. They have Broadband Engine in place of Broadband Server and 4 Visualiser in place of GSCube.

Sony also did a demonstration of high performance eDRAM that gives around 512 GB/s of bandwidth.

My speculation is in order for the Visualiser to match GSCube, they're going to use that high performance eDRAM somehow, that kind of bandwidth can allow support for alot of GPU, say they can put 8 of the PSP like GPU in each Visualiser.

What ever they do, I am pretty sure their aimed is to beat the GScube peak performance for that 4 Visualisers part.

Nope, that would be harder.

You'd have to re-engineer the EE anyway since there's no way you could get that 4-stage pipeline (AFAIR) in the MIPS core to run at 3GHz. Same goes with the other components of the chip.

Would be a bit like strapping a dragster engine to a family car, I guess (to go with the unavoidable car analogy). It'd run fast, but wouldn't run as fast as a real dragster, nor would it be very practical either. Fuel economy would be catastrophic and maintenance costs would go through the roof. :)

Wether it would be MORE work to run EE at 3GHz compared to a purebred 3GHz chip is kinda irrelevant, since the EE isn't designed to run at those speeds and it would never run very well.
