New PS4 Smell

First time I've seen someone say 3 hours. I've heard that it's 8-10, which is still a bit disappointing considering the DS3 was ~20-25. At least the PS4 charges in standby.

Semi-random thing that I discovered with mine this morning. New accounts seem to require a PSN account. This was a bit of an issue for me because I have a 3 year old who I like to have her own saved games. On the PS3, I just had her as a different user. I couldn't find a way to do that on the PS4 without a PSN account.

You can set up a parent managed PSN account though. It is pretty easy to do. The one downside is that it requires an email address. I created my daughter one and just forwarded it to myself for that purpose.

The other thing I learned that may be interesting to some is that if someone tries to start a game on their account while it is suspended on another account, it exits the game. I had Knack open on my account and opened it on my daughter's - it gave me a warning that it was going to close it on my account and then did so to open it on hers.

I think I actually like the parent account thing (minus the email) because I have a lot more control over what she can do (I can limit social features like facebook and live video watching). But it was a bit of a change.

Yeah, that master account thing was introduced in PS3.

The unique thing is they map parental control ratings from "all" the countries into a unified numerical scale. So even if you import a game from another country, you can still manage it from the same parental control setting.

The new thing for PS4 is you can upgrade a subaccount (the child's account) to a full account when he or she grows up. All the trophies and digital assets should remain intact.

Didn't know you must have a PSN account to create a local account on PS4. I'll keep that in mind.

Damn, I need a longer cable then if I need to recharge more frequently.

These are micro USBs?

But I had another cable and when I tried it while setting up the PS4, it didn't recognize the Playstation button presses, so I had to swap it with the one that came in the box.

Yap, should be micro USB. I used the bundled one and the one that came with my BT headset. They both worked.

Got my PS4 on the 15th but didn't get around to setting it up till this evening. My wife and daughter really had a good time with Lets Dance and afterwards we watched a DVD together. I have a Pioneer Elite Blu Ray player but wanted to see how the video quality was and I have to say I was impressed. The PS3 had very good DVD and Blu Ray playback and the PS4 appears to have similar attention to quality. I'd like to see some professional reviews but I can say it is seems to be a very competent DVD/Blu Ray player.

The browser is pretty useless, which is what I expected. Using a phone as a virtual keyboard makes things easier but at the end of the day for me at least browsing is best when you are right in front of the screen not to mention the UI just isn't ideal - touch screens, touch pads or mouse are IMO the best way to navigate around the web and I don't see that changing even if Sony gives this more attention.

Overall the system UI appears to be pretty well thought out although I got frustrated a couple times, my initial download of the 1.50 system update disappeared after it was completely downloaded. For some reason it stalled and when I exited out and restarted it was gone. In a somewhat similar situation I was downloading Warframe and it too got stuck on install and when I went back to the downloads I noticed it was listed twice and when I deleted the second one thinking it was a duplicate it deleted the first WF install which apparently was seperate for the second from the second but both are needed....

Camera seems to work well enough, tried some voice commands which worked flawlessly but as I have said in other threads VR isn't not my personal preference for navigating around my game/media device. I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of the image on screen of my daughter and I when we were playing around inside of the playroom - this might be due to me not spending any time trying to improve the quality and rushing somewhat to get it setup. Ironically my daughter seemed to be more interested in the robots from Playroom than anything else we did. I hope we get a new release of Eye Pet for PS4, I think she would like that.

Controller is really nice, best way I can describe it is like going from a Nissan to an Infiniti; same basic design just nicer quality all around. The touch pad BTW is not a gimmick IMO it actually makes sense and I think Sony is truly on to something there.

Finally PSN is as slow as molasses in winter - I remember expressing concerns about network infrastructure a couple weeks ago and it appears my fears were well placed. I'd feel bad for anyone attempting to buy any of the games online and then having to wait to download... Seriously if the game is out of stock but anywhere within 100 miles you'd be better off driving or ordering from Amazon - I wouldn't even hazard a guess on how long it would take to get access to your title if you opt for a digital download Currently I have War Frame, Contrast, Resogun, DC Universe, Blacklight and all the apps (Amazon, Netflix, VUDU, HULU and Crunchyroll) all downloading and it would not surprise if me if it take several days to get access to this stuff.

I think Sony has designed a nice replacement to the PS3 but its going to take some time to reach its potential.

Are you still having trouble with PSN ?

I downloaded and installed Netflix, Hulu Plus and Vudu in 5 to 10 seconds each.

PSN got better for about an hour but by better it was marginally better. I was able to get Contrast downloaded but most downloads still say >>> 20 hours left....

Hmph, over here, I am able to stream movies and live BF4 games, play KZSF MP, download and install apps fine.

The only things missing are the "What's New" page and the "LiveAreas". Sony probably disabled them to save the servers in the mean time.

Some more observations:

* Played for 2 hours wirelessly. DS4 still shows 3 out of 3 bars. I haven't used the DS4 mic or speaker. The LED light bar doesn't seem to eat up the battery.

* The PSEye. Once it's connected, I didn't see any way to turn the camera or the mic off. I disconnected it since the PS4 is in my office. Will connect only when I use it.

I played maybe 5 or 6 hours total after charging and my DS4 was at 1 out of 3. I was a bit surprised, since I rarely thought about charging my DS3's

Did you use the DS4 mic or speaker ?

Also, there was an earlier question about DVD upscaling. Yes, there is a setting to configure video output to 1080/24fps.

Playing a DVD now, it looks grainy. May be not as good as PS3 upscaler ?

That's for BD playback at 24 fps (technically a multiple of 24) to help reduce/eliminate judder with TVs that support the feature and have a refresh rate that's a multiple of 24. I have seen no settings for DVD up-scaling yet.

I access the Settings from inside the DVD movie though (Press OPTIONS). Does it only affect Blu-ray ? If so, it's a UI bug. The Setting should not be there if it doesn't apply to DVD.

Hmmm, could have sworn that was BD only but I could be wrong. Regardless, that's not for up-scaling, it's just for smoother playback of films originally captured at 24fps.

The DS4 only has a built-in Lithium-Ion battery pack, right? Any play times before needing to be recharged under 12 hours is a bit alarming. I certainly hope this isn't typical of next-gen.

I turned it off. And it doesn't seem to change anything. So you're right. That setting is not used in DVD mode. No wonder it looks grainy. :)

I played for 3 hours now, with 2 bars out of 3 remaining.

Tried KZSF, Flowers, and Resogun.

Flowers is entirely motion control and makes extensive use of rumble (Completed 3 levels)

Resogun uses the DS4 mic to announce events frequently (Played for 25 minutes or so).

KZSF is more traditional.

It looks like 8 hours is about right. YMMV. Maybe longer if you're playing traditional games.

Will see how long it takes for me to drain the DS4 completely.

So far, I've spent about 4-5 hours with my PS4.

I like the hardware of the main system. I like that there's no external PSU. I like that the disc drive is a slot loader and not a tray. (Although it seems really loud when loading and ejecting a disc). I think the led light on the console is kinda cool and the system looks better in person than in pictures. Doesn't seem loud at all to me either.

The DS4 is ok, imo. I wish it had more girth in the parts that sit in your palms. I wish the controller head more weight too. So for me, it's not as comfortable as the 360 controller. D-Pad and triggers are nice. The lightbar reflects of my TV and it's bezel. It's kind of annoying. I hope they add in a patch that allows you to disable it soon. The touch pad does feel cheap as well. I like the speaker in the controller (sometimes, I fall for the gimmicks).

I've only splayed Knack and KZ so far. They're ok so far. Launch titles. Not much more to say.
