New PS4 Smell

Either I need to express myself more clearly or you need to read my posts more carefully. :)

Me said:
I expect the same to be true of PS4. Hang on while I double-check...yeah. Correct. You bleepin' bleepety bleep can't watch movies via remote play, ludicrous!

In the old PS Video Store, the purchased movies (and TV episodes) are tied to the buying device. When they introduced Vita, they relaxed the DRM such that you can transfer the movies and TV episodes between Vita and the PS3.

These days, PS Video Store is streaming based. So there should not be issues like this anymore. But your old video contents are still around. So you will still need to transfer them to the device you want to watch them on.

Which was a terrible decision and radically reduces the value of their content. Previously you had the option of downloading a rental first but now you have zero guarantee that the premium price paid for "high def" rentals will actually result in a quality viewing.

The wife and I rented "The World's End" a short while back and about 10 minutes from the end of the film the image quality dropped down to lowest bitrate Netflix quality and stayed there. Not getting what you paid for is not a way to endear customers to your service.

Cheers

I am a big Netflix fan. It's the best streaming service I have ever used. I still prefer to rent a BluRay, but if that is not available (like last two times only the DVD version was in) then Netflix would be a great next best. Most reliable service I've used so far. Definitely think Sony should try to model themselves after that.

*shrug* Haven't hit that problem yet.

I rent my videos from Vudu, Apple TV, PS Store randomly.
Also subscribe to Hulu Plus and NetFlix. My wife has Amazon Prime account.

Just pick your favorite streaming solution. :)
Many are already on PS4 and PS3.

Quality will keep improving.

And yes, don't forget Blu-ray too.

Because the libraries are different, there's still need to use different providers. I look forwards to a future singular repository of everything ever made. Like gas is provided down the same pipes from different providers, every portal could access the same core database with its own pricing model and service structure. Then when we get home on our levitating porcines, we can have the freedom to choose our content without arbitrary restrictions.

I'd never go for streaming if quality was the least bit important to me (and as it happens, it is very.)

Even at the best of times, streaming video quality is shit compared to bluray disc, and it goes rapidly downhill from there.

Physical is where it's at, if you care about the experience. Also, what streaming video services offer surround/high quality audio? Hell, BR audio is higher bitrate than streamed internet video in some cases! ;)

BluRay has my preference also, but like I said, after that, Netflix HD is the next best thing for us (better than anything we get over our HD Digital Cable service). It has *very* good quality most of the time, and also supports 5.1 ... I can definitely still see the difference in image quality versus BluRay obviously, but it gets surprisingly close and sounds very good.

So what happens when your internet connection stutters? What if you want to rewind or fast forward - how well is that handled?

Can you put the video on pause overnight and have it resume without crapping its pants...?

Image quality drops down. At least in theory. In practice, my internet connection is rock solid and haven't had this happen on Netflix yet at all since I started using it in September. However, some movies have better encoding/quality than others (usually the newer stuff looks better).

Better than on BluRay, imho. I just press and hold left, and you get image based search. It's pretty much perfect.

Yes, perfectly and flawlessly. Even better, you can resume it on any device. My TV has Netflix, my PS3 has Netflix, my PS4 has Netflix, our iPads have Netflix, our phones have Netflix, our PCs have Netflix, and I can stop watching a movie at any moment, switch to another device, and resume there just where I left off. Even just resuming on the same device doesn't work nearly as reliably with BluRay, as I am sure you are aware.

Even better, I can do this with multiple movies and TV series at once. It will know exactly where I left off. And best of all, it supports multiple profiles. So at startup, I can choose me, my wife or my son's profile. And it will keep track of whatever they are watching separately.

So yeah, as a user experience, imho Netflix beats practically everything.

<insert NSA comment but can't be arsed to think one up>

I've been trialling Netflix and finding it very good. IQ is excellent and it never falters. As for FF and RW, I play the content and watch it. Very little need for FF and RW. But even that works. I can skip forwards in 10 second chunks to jump past opening credits, and rewind. I get thumbnail previews.

You can switch off the console and then fire up Netflix and it'll resume where you left off. You can also resume on any other device as your bookmark is attached to your account. I can switch to PC and carry on watching should I want to. Netflix is a very good service in terms of playback IMO. The UI and finding content is a bit crap, and the range of content is also rather sparse such that I'm not sure I'll find it worth a subscription. It was the same with LoveFilm's library, and that's the biggest issue for me regards subscription services. Direct rentals offer a better library at significantly more cost.

For me the subscription is worth it so far - we're in the middle of Suits season 2 now, and have watched the 'Netflix originals' Orange is the New Black (decent), and House of Cards (I loved this one - the original BBC version is on there as well btw).

I'm subscribed to both Netflix and LOVEFiLM. Netflix is by far the better of the two services and even delivers on the crappy 2Mb connection we have here. It still delivers the 5.1 where applicable but the image quality is, though a little fuzzy, is surprisingly good. It can get a little blocky sometimes when the connection chokes. LOVEFiLM tends to just stop and complain as soon as any bandwidth construction occurs.

So just for reference, we have 60 / 6 Mbit/s ... And the cable provider is considered very reliable at actually delivering that speed (as is my experience). I have the option to upgrade to 150 / 15 Mbit/s for 10 euro extra per month, but don't really need that yet.

Yeah, OK! Don't rub it in...

I'm getting great quality on 12 Mbps. That's far better than DVD - think of it as DVD quality in HD I guess. I'm not seeing any macroblocking or other issues with quality. I'm sure video enthusiasts won't appreciate the quality, but a 5 GB film download (Video Unlimited size) is not going to be any better quality. In fact, 5 GB for a 2 hour movie is a 5.5 Mbps video feed, so hardly stellar quality. Compared to video quality over the decades (analogue TV, interlacing, VHS, low-quality digital SD broadcasts, YouTube), streamed video is pristine and well within typical viewer tolerances. Easily on the upper end of user tolerances.
