New PS4 Smell

In Norway its 80-100 USD for a game PS3/PS4, 650USD for a PS4, so your not that bad of, unless your prices do not include VAT (25%). Which the Norwegian prices do.

I just bought my PS4 yesterday and tried out Killzone Shadow Fall and Resogun. Due to me broadcasting it through my PC, I was restricted to doing it at 720p or 1080i. I have to say that there was so much eye candy and fluidity that it was really a surprise.

After the 1.52 update I had some HDMI handshake issues through my HDCP stripper.
It turned out that I just had to power cycle my HDCP stripper (which hadn't been power cycled in like a year or so) to fix the HDMI handshake issue. Wasted an hour of my time.

Now it's all roses :)

I have a 100M connection and it also greatly surprised me that I downloaded Killzone Shadow fall within about an hour (the full 36GB of it)

What's your PSN Id ?

My playtime is pretty much ph*cked until next year. I am collecting friends in the mean time.

Haven't joined any party to play KZSF MP yet. Prefer to solo Resogun at the moment.

May I ask where are you from?

I don't want to brag, but I have a 150Mbps (which nets me around 164Mbps) connection (Switzerland). Unfortunately though, PSN overhere seems to max out around 30Mbps most of the time, which is still better than a few years ago when it was around the 20Mbps mark.

An extract from my gateway for the last 24 hours:

100Mb here. With one download at time I see 30mbit usage max, sometimes could be much worse. With 2-3 downloads I've seen 50mbit usage.

I'm in Ukraine, but had my router configured to use google dns (I was lazy to dig for my ISP dns ip). Recently I spot a thread on gaf about PSN download speeds. I read about DNS can affect download speed there, because different DNS servers may resolve same hostname into different IPs (in the cases like CDN which we have). And so you may get much different route when downloading. I played a little with different public DNS servers and set up the router to use my ISPs DNS. Before that my download was much worse with googles dns, probably because it could route me to USA while I'm in Europe and have shorter routes to european servers via level3.

Were you ever able to utilize the full bandwidth with a singular download? Maybe your router / gateway is at the limit, which might be another factor. Mine was anyway, until I replaced it with a server running linux acting as my gateway. Typically, I can max out my bandwidth using wget if I find a dedicated server that can sustain that kind of speed as well (which is actually quite rare).

I am using the DNS from my local provider by the way. No chance with PSN however of getting anywhere close to the bandwidth my line could sustain. Perhaps I will do a tcpdump to see where it downloads the stuff from, but I don't recall ever having a higher throughoutput than 30Mbps. Even so, 30Mbps is pretty good IMO - which would mean less than 3 hours for a download of ~36GB.

No idea how Strange could download that within an hour though - that would mean pretty close to 80Mbps over the entire duration. That's quite impressive.

Phil, yes my router is able to throughput 100mbit. I bought a digital version of Last of us, afaik it uses NDs servers to download most of the game. And it downloaded completely in about a little more than an hour. There was like 50mbit usage easily.

Looking forward to your traceroutes to psn servers :)

ND used Amazon I believe, as seems to be currently the most popular platform for PS3 games that implement their own cloud features.

I'm running BIND on a QNAP NAS here so that all DNS lookups are local, it's a simple caching DNS setup. It means that ~90% are all in the 3-8ms range. It also means I get to see all the servers in use by everything on my network without having to resort to WireShark or others sniffers.

Hum... name resolution has nothing to do with download speeds. A local dns lookup can decrease the latency when you first access a domain name, but after that, the information is cached and will always be accessed locally. It's nice to have a local dns server (I use bind as well, privately and professionally), but in the grand scheme of things, it's not very significant.

The context of a local dns I think is more about that if you download something off a European PSN, you might be pointed to a more local / regional download server from Sony. I find it highly unlikely though that a change in DNS would have an impact on that, since a DNS only converts a domain-name into a corresponding IP address. However what domain-name you are accessing might depend on the PSN store you are downloading from...

Also, if you want to see what servers you are using, I'm sure your QNAP has dig on it... e.g. dig @[nameserver] [domain.tld] etc

BoardBonobo, Phil DNS has nothing to do with the speed. But I guess you didn't read my post carefully. Try to resolve zeus.dl.playstation.net via 8.8.8.8 (google) and 208.67.222.222 (opendns). They resolve into different IPs. Here I also have different routes to them. So the speed can be different too.

Indeed, it does...

184.84.182.67 is somewhere in Norway.
84.53.175.137 is somewhere in the US.
195.10.11.185 is somewhere in the Netherlands.

Interesting indeed! I might have to try if I can get better download speeds. @Strange, care to out yourself where your location is so that we can get some of that tasty 100Mbps of bandwidth? :devilish:

Phil I also noticed that on my box opendns resolves to different IP than for you. I checked with another box (which is located in Russia), and it gave another more IP.

Interesting to know the technical side of this thing. How come servers have different databases. Would be nice to setup own DNS and make it resolve to best suited servers.
