New Mass Effect Interview

I agree a lot of what Bioware says they have planned sounds great. I just didnt understand where your comparisons to the MGS4 trailer (facial animation, detail etc.) were coming from. I guess I still dont. ;)

What comparisons? We were discussing ME screenshots, I said the fiacial animations were the best I'd ever seen in any game.

Mckmass is the one who brought MGS4 in here. And there's a 720p direct feed video with facial animation scenes so comparisons are easy anyways.

I was being friendly when I brought up MGS4. I said it because you said ME facial animations are the best ever. I was just poking fun.

But seriously now. Where are those ME dev interviews with this extra footage?

OXM, TeamXBOX, GameSpot, IGN there's interviews everywhere.

There's no new footage, just the 720p trailer which can be found on TXB.

Bioware is developing a complete digital acting system, and facial expressions will be the primary means of picking up on NPC's reactions while talking with them, facial animations will be an integral part of gameplay.

"Using what they are calling “advanced digital actorsâ€￾, the team will be using a combination of hi-fi artwork and sophisticated facial animations that will create situations in character interaction where there will be no need to display mood descriptors or unnecessary dialogue. Instead of a character physically stating that they are upset, you’ll instead see it naturally through a scowl or related facial gesture. The early renders look nearly Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within quality. "

So out of curiousity how does that information make it better than MGS4? Or are you just comparing the two videos?

Nah, ME wins facial animations no contest. MGS4 has a very nice character model, that's where it shines, snakes suit is sick... Snakes face is not the best, the animations were much less realistic than ME.

OMG I know have to defend MGS4 again.

Scooby how can you compare an easy 5+ minutes worth of seeing Solid Snakes face animate to 5 seconds worth of ME's guy face animate. The guy makes one emotional animation. It looks like he is thinking "hmmm.... let me get 'em"

Solid Snake was shallowing his spit, licking his lips, coughing, talking, etc. When didn't even get a chance to see ME's facial animation yet.

Comparing the 2 videos, it's looking awesome so far. And understanding that it's a key part of the game, therefore should recieve much mor attention than MGS4 which is not based on character dialogue and extensive face to face character interaction.

Here's something I put together:

I love the subtlety of the last 4 screens. (he's standing in a sandstorm btw)

The way the shadows are used in the scene are wonderful. It really sets an atmosphere to the scene, I can't really explain it. This title hase caught my interest. Its one of my most anticipated games.

I was referring to the comparison you made in this post...http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showpost.php?p=622937&postcount=10

Saying ..."Nah, ME wins facial animations no contest. MGS4 has a very nice character model, that's where it shines, snakes suit is sick... Snakes face is not the best, the animations were much less realistic than ME."

...just seems rather silly to me considering what we've seen so far, and how little.

Actually Kojima's said in several interviews dynamic facial expression and body language (as Snake's character previewed in the trailer) is going to be a big theme in MGS4 as well, with soldiers naturally expressing emotions and reactions on the battlefield according to the situation, doing away with old standbys like the classic "!" over alarmed enemies heads. They're very different genres but it sounds like Bioware is headed in a similar direction with advanced character expression.

Anyhow I didnt mean to hijack the Mass Effect thread with another game. ME is my most anticpated 360 title and I cant wait to see what Bioware comes up with next.

QFT. I had to quote this just because I was about to post the exact samething. Hideo has said long ago that they are doing the extreme facial animation thing. Maybe it's something that the next-gen systems will do alot more of.
