More new folders, folding longer and harder!

IMO, I think we should first prod the slackers out there and get them contributing a little more.

Come on those that have signed up - start folding again!

Wellcome Simon :D

WELCOME SIMON F!!!

Yes, those WU are pretty damn big actually. It takes my 1.6Ghz P-M about 12-18 hours each, sometimes longer. Though, it does make for a good way to show your computer's power.

Good morning :)

I agree with you Dave. Lets work people ;)

*BUMPAGE*

We're still down as a team since September, so get those folding butts in shape and FOLD. ;)

PS: How do you like my new sig?

Ahem.

MORE FOLDING. That is all.

NoNamer, your sig picture is interesting... it's just a pity that it's incorrect :)

Anyway, after two or so weeks my ancient PC has done 30% of a work unit. I guess I'd better shovel some more coal on.

Simon,

Your PC is more than good enough for what you originally bought it (e-mail, browsing, etc..). I still have my P3-366 notebook that I use for some professional activities :) The problem is folding is too demanding and they have some deadlines. See it here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq.html#stats.howdead
How do you set the deadlines for the work units?

Each work unit is benchmarked on a dedicated 500 MHz Celeron machine without SSE/3DNow. We look at how many days it takes, and multiply this by 2.5. This corresponds to requiring such a machine to fold less than 10 hours a day in order to meet the deadline. From our experience, the majority of donor machines are faster than our benchmarking machine, and virtually none are slower, so this shouldn't be a problem (if a machine is slower, it may need to fold more hours a day). Occasionally, deadlines may be set longer than the above calculation indicates, but the reason for having deadlines at all is that the sooner we get back work units, the sooner we can put the results to good use. We are looking into, in the very near future, having the assignment server take machine speed into account in making assignments, thereby allowing slower machines to receive smaller work units.

Depending on how many hours it is running maybe it will not finish the WU before deadline. Anyway thanks for your help and enthusiasm ;)

Maybe you could set it to do Genome units? The are often worth only a point or so each. Might be able to actually 'get on the charts' that way.

Exactly. I use it for editing and running X-Windows. I really couldn't be bothered upgrading.

I wasn't aware of the deadline aspect though. My guess is that there is very little chance my PC will do it in time. I guess I might as well bow out. <shrug>

I think there are some chances with 24/7 but not sure :)
I only run my pc from 8am to ~6pm.
Arghhh! o_O The damned thing hit the deadline with only 40% done. How do you tell it to work on something smaller?! There doesn't seem to be an option in configure

Good Morning :)

Sorry Simon, I dont know. Maybe you should ask this in the other thread because there are nice people with much more knowledge and experience. Maybe Deepak can help you.

Question: Is your mobo a BX or LX mobo?
