Folding@home Beyond3D_Team - COVID-19 Challenge

With the recent news of Folding@home project enjoying 20x increase of donors who are eager to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic, I think it would be a good idea to revive the Beyond3D_Team, which was once in the Top 100 rating, but currently borders Top 1000 with ~2m points per day and ~170m points in total.

I challenge our fellow forum members to get the team back into Top 500, which would require a daily performance of 8m points for the duration of May 2020. To achieve this goal, we need several more donors in addition to the current 5 active ones.

To participate, please first register/retrieve your passkey for extra Quick Return Bonus (QRB) points, then download and install the latest Folding@home client software and configure the identity to use your passkey, team number 32377, and your Member name on this forum.

BTW discrete GPU with a high PPD rate (400K+) will complete the work units in resonable time and receive additional QRB points; these include:
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970(Ti)/980(Ti), 1070(Ti)/1080(Ti), GTX 1650S/1660(S/Ti), RTX 2060(S)/2070(S)/2080(S/Ti), Titan X/Xp/V/RTX
  • AMD Radeon R9 290(X)/390(X), R9 Fury/Nano, RX 470/480, RX 570/580/590, RX Vega 56/64, RX Vega M, Vega Pro, Vega Frontier Edition, VII, RX 5500(XT)/5600(XT)/5700(XT)

Great, thank you!

So far the Beyond3D team is hibernating, as most original contributors are either inactive or have switched to other teams, and only barbos is folding almost daily.

Just for the fun of it, overtaking some inactive teams and getting back into Top500 would require ~250m points, and it's entirely possible to achieve that goal by end of May if we make 7-8m points per day.

My Radeon RX 5700 XT arrives this Thursday, so I will be making ~0.8m PPD (if they fix shortage of work units on the assignment servers).
That should raise the daily output to ~2.5m points, but we still need more active users to improve the rate.

So anyone with some of these recent GPUs listed above, please join the Beyond3D folding team!

Yeah, my 7980xe cpu only make ~200k ppd but at least it very rarely runs out of assigned work.
The Vega 64 LC otoh can make anything between 100k and 1.2m, depending of this WU assignment

Well, Folding@home servers are still overloaded. My RX 5700 XT maxed out at just 600K PPD.

It looks like the current FAH client v7.6 automaticaly increases the delay between each new attempt, which eventulally reaches several hours while the GPU just sits idle doing nothing.
Beta client reduces maximum delay to one hour, but it doesn't help much.

The workaround is to manuallly pause/unpause the GPU slot, which forces the client to issue another request. Not very convenient I have to say...

The Beyond3D_Team is now making ~5.5m PPD with the help of a few forum members who joined recently, and moved up to #880s in the ratings.

It's still a long way to go for reaching top 500, with very strong competition from very powerful teams who climb nearly billion points each day - like the Nvidia Corp. team with an actual DGX SaturnV supercomputer!

So everyone is kindly invited to join our team #32377 and help us climb up the ladder some more.

Thanks! There is no way to limit GPU usage in V8 clent, but I never really heard about GPUs damaged by running Folding@home, it's not nearly as memory bandwidth intensive as cryptocurrency mining, so you don't really need to downclock or undervolt.
There were OpenCL driver issues when GPU overclocking could result in corrupt Folding@home computations, however these issues are largely solved by now; either way computational cores use CUDA on NVidia cards.

You may want to limit or entirely disable CPU slots /cores though, as CPU work units are much less power efficient becayse they are credited much lower than GPU work units.

yea I stopped cpu as it was hitting 90f. I am thinking of upgrading my radiator fans

Using the "Advanced Control," there is a slider to lower the GPU usage.

Edit: Another option to lower power/heat, which is what I do, is to set up a custom curve in MSI Afterburner (or the equivalent). I'm am running a 4090 capped at 900mv and 2580 MHz. It draws between 150-160w and stays about 45c.
