New Cell Info/Interview

This is a pic from the E3 2006 press release, this is the latest "official" pic of PS3 from behind.

Judging by the power cord socket, the PSU is internal.
Interesting how they'll handle the cooling.
The semi rotund cross-section of the case would lend well for a fairly big, relatively slow revolution and quiet fan(s) inside the case, positioned like this:
(O)
The ( and ) being the curved upper and lower covers of the PS3, and the O being the fan.
With intelligent air channelling, I can imagine the PS3 running surprisingly cool and quiet.

I wonder if they've applied some of the cooling knowledge from their projectors, especially the high-end "Qualia" and "Ruby" projectors. They have some rather well designed cooling (and the cases share a little similar form).

The same type of stuff was said about the Emotion Engine from sony being used in different devices as wellas the Ps2 being used as a pc. I remeber them showing the PS2 hooked up to a monitor and a mouse and keyboard and potentially running linux on it, also they were suppose to have a version of AOL for the PS2. None of this ever came about, I won't beleive them until it a reality now

Um.

Oooo. From the sounds of it, using 2 separate chips, I guess they had left over processors and wanted to find a use for them :p

How much more would need to be added to include an integrated PS2?

Not a chance, you'll always be able to put larger (and more conveniently located) fans mounted horizontally with ducting to route the air out of the case. I'd think about 3 fans, one each for the Cell and RSX and one for the PSU area to try to keep that heat from migrating to the rest of the system. That may sound like it'd be loud, 3 fans, but because you aren't needing any one to handle all of the heat from the case you can run them at lower speeds.

Not to drag this thread in that direction, but something I've been kind of wondering since the talk first came up is maybe the talk of Cell speed changes is about costs and heat management - a battle between an external power brick vs. the heat of the internal one. The internal one is certainly the more elegant solution and I can see Kutaragi wanting to keep it even though it costs them a lot of money. Maybe someone from the more realistic side of Sony floated the idea to see what the reaction of people would be - if there was a huge uproar about either occurence then they'd know the best route to go.

Well the internal PS is IMO the most likely reason for balooning of the case size from 2k5 E3, if they indeed changed this I have no doubt the machine would end up much smaller again.

32MB of RDRam + 4MB of DRam + sound and I/O chips. NOT cheap - and I sincerely doubt EE&GS would be the Major part of the cost.
I would like to think they planned this a little better then integrating an entire PS2 though.

How much RAM would the OS need anyway? I guess to run a PS2, you'd need a DVD drive. So the TV would then become a TV+DVD player+console, which is adding cost and features perhaps not wanted, especially if one goes wrong.
