Need the cheapest card that matches an amd 6950

I just checked the Anandtech benches and the GTX670 should be about twice as fast overall as the HD6950, whilst using a bit less power at idle and quite a bit less under load hence running cooler and quieter. I can confirm that this particular 670 is not loud at all, though in some situations it has some "coil whine", though that seems restricted mostly to loading screens for whatever reason. Also noticed the GTX670 has over 10x the Tessellation performance of the 6950

I don't know the customs in the UK, but for Portugal they would definitely hold the package for weeks/months until you found the original receipt for the card and then they'd charge you the UK's VAT over the value that was in the receipt. And they would also charge you the VAT for the shipping.
If you don't get them the receipt, they'll just find some store's listing and charge the VAT over the price of a new card.

If that happened and I said i bought it off homer for £50 for example would they just charge me the vat on £50 ?

If it comes through mail, they'll always ask for the original receipt from the retailer. If you don't have it, it doesn't really matter what you tell them. They'll just make a quick search on a retailer and assume that's the price you paid for it.

but since its not in the original box wont it be obvious its not from a retailer and its a second hand item not a new item ?
what about people who buy stuff off ebay from private sellers, they wouldnt have the original receipt

Today, I learned that if I want to mess with customers in the UK, I should ship electronics in the boxes of far less expensive equipment. I can see the online reviews now "Pro: Got it fast, and got it cheaper than the competitors. Con: why did my 980Ti ship in a Radeon 5450 box?!?"

Okay, what is the best way to ship something from the US to England? UPS from my office wants to charge $114 for the cheapest service... that's barely cheaper than buying a brand new card! I was thinking $20 would be reasonable, $30 tops...

Would USPS be better? Fedex? I would rather put on flippers and swim across the ocean than pay that much.

I don't know how else to explain this...

- If you don't send them a receipt through mail or e-mail, they will consult some retailer store and assume that's the price you paid for the hardware.
If it was something ancient like a Geforce 3 or something, it might pass and they won't charge anything. If it's something that's still being sold on many places (e.g. a Geforce 670), they will write down the price of the new item from some random retailer and charge you the V.A.T. over that.

It doesn't matter if's wrapped in the original box, an old unrelated box or a couple of used diapers. The x-ray scan will show you're importing electronic components and so they'll open the package to see what's inside the package. Then they'll keep them in a storehouse for over a week, until they decide to send a letter to the receiver, asking for the receipt in order to charge the receiver for the VAT..
Then the receiver gets the letter asking for the receipt, sends them the receipt and then the package goes from one place to another, where it awaits for another 1-2 weeks for some dude to check if the receipt corresponds to the package. Then it goes to some other room where it waits to be sent.
In the end, you have to pay them for:
1 - the VAT for the item,
2 - VAT for the shipping costs,
3 - a friggin' rent for the room space where they keep the package (which depends on how much time they keep it in there)
4 - VAT over that rent
5 - operational costs for tearing up your package, checking what's inside
6 - VAT for the operational costs

In the end, you usually have to pay some 30-35% more than whatever is in the receipt you send them.
This is for stuff coming from outside the EU, of course.
The customs usually claim that all packages go through a random verification and each one has ~40% chance of being held for control. Which is a load of bullshit.
They will personally pick everything larger than a letter that comes from the USA, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. They know very well where people try to get their electronics from.

Again: this is what happens in Portugal. I have no idea if the customs are equally anal about international mail packages in the UK.

What a bunch of commie bullshit. Can't even do something nice for someone without big brother getting its well deserved cut (lol).

I actually packaged it in my GTX970 box because it is the sturdiest. Guess I'll put it in the fucking 6600GT box and hope they don't bother to open it.

Well I'm not trying to pay for davros' healthcare I'm trying to hook him up with a GPU.

But can we all be thankful that Davros is healthy enough to enjoy videogames with a videocard? :D

I can't stress this enough, though:
Davros, you should check your own customs' behavior. All the process I described has been varying over the years, depending on the government in power..
There's a good chance the UK won't be so terrible.

Oh dears, look at what you've done! :(

Enough is enough. The question from the title of the thread is quite clear. Why do you stay off topic and spam all the time? :(

Homerdog what you've done is a beautiful thing,
but if it's going to put you out financially then just leave it.
I will survive...
While the Saintly Five Terabytes of Gaming Goodness™ is dead at the moment it will rise up from the grave just like the baby jesus...
On another note: my pc is still crashing and somehow its removed the boot files from my c: drive so it looks like my board is faulty as well.
That's going to be awkward as a shop wont have a socket 775 mboard in stock so I'll have to get one from ebay
I have another pc but if you put in a large gfx card it blocks the sata ports and only 2 are usable (I need 6)
Once upon a time I used to believe oem's like hp didnt use chimps to design motherboard layouts
and while i'm in rant mode, case makers why so many 5.25 drive bays ???

Davros, I have a complete PC with i3-540 taking my space. If you're interested I can send it or bring it to you (depending where in UK you live). Motherboard is from AsRock, model H55M-LE. I also sit on Athlon II 260 + MB (possibly 760G based) and quite a few other bits I'm most likely going to throw / give away.

Woah lightman that would be awesome, allthough scouseland is the other end of the country,
thats a socket 1156 board isnt it, still it would no doubt be an upgrade from my q6600 (even though its hyperthreaded and not quadcore, I think so, someone correct me)

and I have just ordered another socket 775 board (with the needed 6 sata ports - result;)) off ebay (thanks to a friend who said i have an ebay account you can pay me when you can afford it)

to be fair, if its ok with you is there another b3d u.k reader who is using something slower than a q6600 they would be more deserving.
I should have made a thread titled my rolls royce has broken down :D

Hum.. the Q6600 is a very overclockable (most can easily reach ~3.2GHz through multiplier alone) quad-core (Core2 never had hyperthreading) while the i3 is a multiplier-locked dual-core Nehalem with hyperthreading.
I'm not sure which is faster for games, but I'd bet on the quad-core if overclocked, for sure.

Good idea! Who wants i3-540 (HT and can overclock to 4GHz easily) just let me know. Either pick-up or just pay for postage. Tower, PSU, HDD, motherboard and CPU. No DDR3 included.

:)
