NBA2K6 Screens - holy crap!

Thats the 2K series for ya, graphically blows Madden and most sports games thrown out by EA out of the water.

Like whoa...

I don't see what is so fantastic about this. It was nice to see the cloth physics, but that was about it. The players don't look right. They need some more texture to their skin. They look like claymation figures with some sweat effects.

I guess it's good for a sports title, but I don't think it was very convincing and certainly not anywhere near "holy crap!" level. Then again, it's a lot harder to make something look real as opposed to the stylized characters we see in action games. Not bad, but I see definite room for improvement here.

PS. It will be really weird when players are totally photo-realistic, but must move unrealistically due to player input and gameplay constraints.

thats pretty impressive imo. it does look like clay figures (something is wrong w/ the color tones too; and the basketball looks odd) but thats probably the most detail ive seen in a sports game yet.

i think its the detail in the muscles and lighting that really brings it out. they gotta fix some things though, but thats why its a wip.

somthing also tells me the facial expressions wont be all that great, from the pics it just looks like open and closed mouths.

NBA2K6

Wife walks in the room ~6 feet from me.

Me: "Hey hon, what do you think of this screenshot?"

Wife: "That is a game?"

Me: "Yeah, it is a new video game."

Wife: "Oh, I thought it was a picture if real guys."

Yeah yeah, it ain't THAT real. But it looks good, and if a casual observer--who is not technical--can think "oh, that is real" then I am sure most casual gamers will be VERY happy.

I officially crown the beginning of the era of: Graphics don't matter anymore unless you are a graphics snob.

prerendered using in-game "assets"
IGN, front page, says they are ingame shots and movies.

Seriously, what kind of rendering engine applies jaggies all over? If you are going to render it you might as well use AA!

Basketball has 10 players on the court, a couple ref, and some low detail fans and stadium. Very controlled environment--no streaming necessary. Sports games tend to have some of the more detailed animations and models because of the above reasons. Fighters and sports games should be the best looking games out IMO.

BTW, to contrast: NBA Live

Whats starting to become HUGELY appearent is that the class of developers really makes a difference in visual quality. Thats expected. But compare this game to a visually lackluster next gen game....Its so varied it boggles the mind.

EDIT: I'm REALLY digging the cloth physics. Is the NFL 2K6 franchise really dead? Damn....there must be a way to (in court) get EA for this....now all we will get (from NFL games) is super sharp Madden 2006 games for a couple of years.

Great effort by Visual Concepts. Especially for a game (season) that's already out for the current gen. And hopefully it won't end up like the X360 Madden 06 in the features department (it won't include the owner/superstar mode, create-a-player, classic teams, and QB vision).

Like X360 Madden 06, I could see it improving in the graphics department once 2007 rolls out.

I sure hope 2K Games enters the boxing game as well.

Well you actually mean is there a way to (in court) get the NFL for this. EA is NOT I repeat NOT at fault. The NFL are the ones and the only ones to blame here.

On-topic: I think the players look great. The basketball and rim needs looks of work though. Cloth physics, perfect.
