N5 expected to use cutting edge processor and graphics tech

But didn't they say it will have ths ability to connect to a monitor out of the box? In which case everything necessary to plug the system into a monitor will have to be.. well in the box. Or did they not actually mention that it will work "out of the box"?

Who wants to plug their console to PC monitor, while you can propably get HDTV or beyond resolutions capable Home Theater Projectors in price of big screen tv by then when it's released? ;) Plus, HDMI / VGA will be a waaayy better way to hook up the console on that than any component cable. :) 16:9 100" screen with 1080p (1920x1080) will definately be the revolution of gaming.

Many HDTVs have VGA/DVI connections, which makes things MUCH easier....
And many people (99% of the population) do not have money coming out of their arses, sadly, so 100" HDTVs with 1080p support are out of the question. Even in 2 years time.

It took me for a while to notice my own mistake. :) So, I'll post now a fixed version what I originally ment:

so, just wrong word order. ;) I guess I added something to that sentence just before posting, which eventually screwed up the meaning. :)

(right now, at least here, native 720p (1280x720) HT projectors cost around the same as 36" wide screen TV.)

I thought Europe was further behind than the US with HDTV.

Maybe they're not broadcasting in HDTV but they must have HDTV-capable displays? Then again, without real HDTV sources...

Plus I thought the ATSC resolutions were a US-specific thing. As with PAL, maybe Europe adopts a slightly different set of formats?

There is no HDTV at all in Europe, it just doesn't exist. Only the hardcore home cinema freaks know about it, the mainstream has not even heard that word yet.

well, in projectors, higher native resolution reduces the pixel net visibility when the screen size comes bigger, so even with PAL DVD material, image quality is higher with higher resolution projector.

thanks, that sounded really nice. ;)

The GameCube component cable is the same price as Sony's and with Xbox you not only have to buy a 20 dollar adapter but you have to get cables in addition to that.

Also, there is no need for a DAC in a digital to digital connection.

People with monitors but no HDTVs?

We are.

We do.

No. The resolutions are the same. Hell, 1080p was only worked into the ATSC specification because it was made part of the DVB HTDV spec.

> As with PAL, maybe Europe adopts a slightly different set of formats?

Different format yes. But the resolutions are the same.

BTW do current HDTV displays support 1080p 60/59.94/50?

Don't think there are many (if any) consumer display devices that hit 1080P. Some will be showing up towards the end of the year (in DLP format at least).

Well 1080p will be broadcast, so Im sure it will get supported. Im more worried about the refresh rates ... without 60/59.94/50 (which wont be broadcast) support it wont be that good for gaming.

I thought no stations in the US were allotted enough bandwidth for 1080p60.

Maybe they can do 1080p24. But stations are trying to reduce bitrates rather than using the full 19.3 Mbps.

More than likely, 1080p will come from cable or satellite than over the air.

Or you hope Blue Ray and HD DVD, as well as video games, don't setting for 1080i, which is a broadcast-limited standard. It would be nice to see 1080p60 from one or all of these sources.

I thought the gamecube component cable had a DAC in it so it could convert the RGB signal to the component signal(which isn't RGB is it? it's it like R and B but doesn't trasmit the G?), and nintedo could easily modify to sell RGB cables and d-terminal cables in other countries.

And doesn't the xbox's hd adapter have a better DAC than the one in the xbox too?

There are many projectors on the market that support 1080p.

Hmm, seems like I did speak too soon. Sharp is supposed to even have a LCD that does that.

Isnt that system being phased out for prism single LCOS chip based systems?

I read that Toshiba was moving away from LCoS and starting a DLP line instead.

True HDTV DMDs might be announced in commercial products this fall...

Samsung is supposed to have a DLP product available (xHD3 - Contrast 5000:1!) in the fall that does 1080p.

The general feeling among devs seems to be 720p will be 'the' resolution for next generation. Lots of devs are looking at putting HDTV on every developers desk.

Anybody get any good suggestions for a small (a 50" TV would leave little room on a desk :) ) 720p TV with component or VGA input?
