MS to release Xbox 360 with HD-DVD in 2006

Maybe they will use the hard drive port, swap out the HDD for the HD-DVD drive?

I think you've hit the nail right on the head, there. Even more clever, perhaps whatever it is from the HD-DVD drive that actually fits into the hdd port, will also have a similar indent on it so that the hdd will piggyback onto that? :D

The drive isn't using much power if its not spinning up and reading.

Well, I'm just saying I will be surprised if it does not have it's own power supply. To be sure, external power supplies are the norm for any external drives I've ever seen. Maybe MS has thought of a way to seemlessly integrate it into the 360's power 'grid.' Looking at the case I just don't see where that would happen though.

Hmm, interesting idea. A shame if you have your 360 horizontal though, yes?

They could add a pass through connector to the power supply plug on the back of the unit, they could utilize the HDD docking bay.

Yes, they could... but those ideas just don't seem viable to me. Maybe MS will show me how it would work out. But if either of those solutions is used, I have no idea how the resultant machine could be elegant.

A shame if you have to connect and disconnect your HDD everytime you want to play a movie too.

I don't think you get it. You would connect the unit, and the hdd could snap on to the top of that.

I was thinking the actual drive would not attach to the hdd port, rather a small wired pod comes out of the drive, and it's the pod that fits to the hdd port (or hell, just make it all wireless- wireless fixes everything! :p ). Then you stack the X360 on top of the HD-DVD drive. Use the included strip of duct tape to wrap around the duo 2-3 times...there you have it- an integrated unit that can sit upright or horizontal. :p Ok, that last part, not so much, but I was serious about the pod. :)

Elegant? I don't think there's a console that has ever been that. I really think they have all been shooting for something less than fugly, but haven't quite succeeded yet.

Well, whatever. If it needs external power it needs it, if it doesn't it doesn't. I'm certainly not sweating it either way.

don't you worry about one little thing XB.

I'm sure MS figured it ALL out for us before they decided to announce it. ;)

I don't see why they could not adapt the add-on to use the current power brick. The 360 sucks much more power when gaming than when just using the dashboard or watching a movie, correct?

Since you will never be watching a HD-DVD and playing a 360 game at the same time I don't see why it would be a problem to divert some of this extra unused power to the add-on drive.

Actually, I get the sense that they hastily drew up something on a napkin while having one of those Vegas buffett meals.:devilish:

It doesn't sound like they showed a prototype or even a mockup. Anyone see any pictures of what it's suppose to look like? Not even some basic Photoshop rendering?

No because this is more than likely a last minute deal. Oh course people some people will say MS planned this since 2003.

It is one big sabotage. Xbox 360 failure is a small price to pay for killing Sony. Fuck this M$ shit!

Can you say Vaporware?

I wouldn't put it past MS to announce such a addon just to create FUD with absolutely no intent to actually produce such a drive.

Excuse me? Please, we're not talking about Nintendo here. j/k ;)
