MS Security; modded 360's banned from LIVE

It is reported that some are using Kai to play "online multiplayer" games... Well, any Silver membership users can use Kai to play "online multiplayer" games...

I guess Xbox Live means a bit more (or slightly different) than that...

Hong.

am i allowed to post this???

1.1 What is XLink Kai?
XLink Kai is a program that you run on your PC or Macintosh that allows you to play system-link / LAN-enabled games for your XBox, Playstation 2, Gamecube and PSP.

The software is referred to as what is known as a 'tunnelling' application. There are various other single-console tunnelling applications available, but XLink remains the only one to support all 3 major consoles...

1.2 So how does it work?
For those people that really want to know, here's a quick briefing.

Your console uses the connectivity between your PC or Mac as a "tunnel". Data is sent from the console, to the PC or Mac, sent over the Internet through XLink Kai to the receiving PC or Mac, and finally sent to the receiving console. This happens in both directions so many times per second that you just have to believe us.

So you then ask, how is my console detecting these games over the Internet? Well these games are using standard Ethernet networks to transmit data. As long as the connection is strong and stable, your console is tricked into thinking the consoles it is connecting to are right there within the same house or building, when in fact they could be sitting 2000 km's away in another continent...

basically free online gaming!

Well, Kai worked nicely enough on Xbox1, while on the 360, LAN gaming has a 30ms ping limit so tunneling will not work unless you live closely to your opponents.

Live is about much more than just gaming online. It's about being a part of the console from the ground up - seeing your friends online, automatically comparing high scores with your friends, consistent list of contacts across all games, being able to drop a "join me in Uno!" and pull someone into your game, etc etc. Add the demos, game vids, XBLA, patches, free content, etc, and it's really a huge part of the 360 experience. In fact, I'd go as far to say the 360 wouldn't be a patch on what it is today without Live.

For this reason, modding your machine with the risk of being hard-banned from Live (MAC-ban means permanent, son!) makes it genuinely not worthwhile.

2nd hand xb2 market is died.
RIP.
I don't think that this was a good movement from the M$.
They will able to increase the profit, but they will receive many, many complain from 2ny hand console owners.

It is really hard to take any statement seriously with that spelling. Come on, this isn't Slashdot, they are Microsoft or MS.

This is exactly the same as the Xbox, those got banned from Live too. Console reliability is hurting the second hand market more than this. If you get a banned box, it's not that much different than buying a box where the drive doesn't read some disks, or freezes occasionally, take it back.

I understand that English might not be your first language by saying stuff like 2ny, 2nd, and M$ makes you look stupid as well as saying xb2. Are you suggesting that companies are responsible for third party sales of their equipment? Like if I buy a counterfeit game from ebay, I should just be able to call the company and demand a free replacement disc because "I paid for it?" even though they had nothing to do with it. If you buy a bad system, its between you and the seller, not you and Microsoft.

To ban the user account, or to ban the console?

Huh?!

Banning the console:
You buy a used console, bring it home, start it up, see it's banned, return it.

Banning the user:
You buy a used console, bring it home, start it up, now your user account is banned.

I don't see any benefit in banning user accounts. The console has been modified, it should be kept off of Live. Again, this is exactly the same as has been going on with XBox for years, there is nothing new. I also don't see how this is affecting brand image at all. All the PO'd people I know, aren't the type of customers any company needs or wants (pirates).

thanks for the correction.

It is not about the legal responsibility , but about the brand image.
What can be the worst : To ban the user account, or to ban the console? They made a decision, and it will be not so good for the brand. But probably they said that:eek:ur reliability is so bad, so it can not make the situation wronger.

People arent going to mistakenly buy a second hand modded 360 and then blame MS once they discover they have no access to Live. They going to blame the seller not the manufacturer especially not enough to hurt brand image.

If I (the original owner) sold you a used toyota with the understanding that it still under warranty due to low miles and then it breaks down and when you go to the Toyota dealership they explained that the engine on this car had been modified with non-certified turbo kit, which voided the warranty. Are you going to blame Toyota or me?
