MS Security; modded 360's banned from LIVE

I wonder how many functional Xbox Live Accounts left behind... In Turkey %99 of Xbox360 owners mod their console and all of them banned ... I'm pretty sure there are a lot of countries like Turkey ... I'd like to know the exact number of banned consoles ... I anticipate more than half a million accounts ...

i thought people here would know what that is; it's epoxy so hackers can't mess about with it i think, because otherwise they can damage to entire board

As an owner of not one but many modded Xboxs (not 360), and two non modded 360's all I have to say is good riddance. There is NO reason any console that is modified should be on Live.

Consoles that need repair are a small, small problem to the rampant piracy that was going on with 360, the only purpose of the DVD firmware was piracy.

A company has every right to protect it's IP. As a paying customer it irks me to constantly hear people playing their 'backups'.

Lets say someone modded his xbox and bought a 120gb drive, where would he stand legally if the things he purchased couldn´t be played anymore because of this lockout?

The console is banned, the Live account and content are still ok, on non-banned consoles. So he can still play it, the EULA for Live requires non modified 360 hardware.

This is a great thing. Sucks to those who are modders! MS (or whoever else) should have the ability to protect their IPs.

Isn't that a bit disingenuous to say backup that implies they legally own a copy which most who do this stuff don't. Like others said good riddance why should legit gamer have to suffer the crap of the bad elements from the mod community.

Good move for MS I think. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't do this sooner, as they would have been able to implement more features and fix security holes within this check at the same time (incentive to upgrade coming along with incentive to not mod your X360).

there are still reports of modded 360 still playing on live. so their are certain cercumstances that MS still cant detect some console versions. my guess is they found away to find the flash firmware of some systems and might have snuck game ids into some games and are also cross checking some games to see if the same game id is being played at the same time or played by way too many customers. becuase its more likly if they are playing a mod they probably dowloaded the iso from the net meaning the same game id which would be easy to track. or they could be cross checking delays by reading your 360 log

this is earlier then i thought becuase a friend of mine is a game tester and he told me in a hint hint sort of way that they would be doing this and it would be tied to halo3 in some way. i think i even hinted on it in a post awhile back but didnt know if it was true or false case at the time

That doesn't really mean anything, the bans for Xbox hardly ever were immediate, usually it happened some time later (24 hours). Insta-Ban doesn't make a whole lot of sense here, the community would derive the cause very quickly. But, if you delay the bans, even just 24 hours, people will pick up alot of false positive signals on the cause. It is a very good tactic at causing general confusion.

I saw some post on another forum about 'my xbox is not currently modified and I got wrongfully banned' and it just made me laugh :devilish:

In regards to this and people that bought content from Live. There have been reports that those that upgraded to the 120GB lost the right to watch their videos and play their downloaded games unless they were signed into Live. And in the case of videos they couldn´t even watch those even if they were signed in.

This is true...MS band the box from live, however your account is still valid. Meaning, if you plug that HDD into another 360, you're allow back into LIVE. You can still play all the games, you purchased and whatnot.

I guess it's one way to move more units, when the market is slow. ;)

I was thinking that now you need to be extra careful about buying 2nd hand units. I'm guessing a lot of those with banned units are gonna try to sell them off through ebay or whatever. Sounds like a bitch to make sure it isn't banned.

good point

that would suck

How could they check if it's modded or not? IIRC some kind of mod chip is not active when not needed. Does it detect a modded DVD drive too?

Don't you have to break some tamper seals to get into the device to mod it? If there were any means to mod it without breaking those seals, it would be difficult to tell, but my advice would be to ask for photographic evidence it has not been tampered with.

wouldn't they take photos before they mod it and then use it over ebay???

well presumably they wouldn't have had the foresight to do that, but they could equally just get any old pic of a 360 off the net and send it. I'm only suggesting something that in most cases, would guarantee a clean xbox.
