Movie Reviews 2.0

Life is really nice but IMO not as breathtaking as Planet Eath. Given that it was shot more recently it has better overall IQ espciallyi n low light (underwater etc..) but they also used staged shots throught out the whole thing (CGI and comped blue screened stuff etc. princiaplly for the time lapse stuff.)

All Life episodes include a making of, showing how they did it.

Has anyone seen 13 Assassins? It comes out on September 9th and I'm seriously interested. There was only ONE theater in my area that was even playing it, when it arrived in theaters, so I missed my chance to see it then. Takashi Miike movies are completely insane. If anyone has seen a movie called "Ichi the Killer" then you know what I'm talking about. 13 Assassins received a 96% on RT. In fact, I didn't read a single negative review.

Horrible bosses was pretty funny, best laughs I've had this year. Just avoid watching the trailers before you see it, at least the trailer I saw practically condenses the whole movie in 2 minutes.

I thought The Jones was an amusing little ditty of a movie. If they shot it from the character of the neighbour they could have made it pretty much a Twilight Zone episode. Now it is just about a feel-good movie, which just goes to show how important perspective / point-of-view is.

Centurion is one to avoid, imho. I imagine reading it as a book would probably be better.

Friends with Benefits 8/10 Probably the best movie of the summer so far. There's a good chemistry between the two leads, Kunis is gorgeous, and the dialogue is fast and charming.

Yes, go see it. Excellent film with a villian you just love to hate. Only downsides to the film are that some of the CGI effects look dodgy (in particular a flame effect) and if you are squeamish then the violence is pretty graphic so that might be a turn off.

Otherwise just a great film.

Anybody here seen Oldboy? My friends keep telling me it's awesome. Available on Netflix streaming so Ima check it out.

Yes. It's one of my favorite movies. It belongs to a trilogy called "The Vengeance Trilogy" directed by Korean director Chan-wook Park. Out of all the movies in the trilogy, it's the most popular, and for good reason. The story is amazing and the action scenes are incredible. Min-sik Choi is an amazing actor, one of my favorites, and if you enjoy Oldboy, check out a movie called I Saw the Devil, where he plays a serial killer. A little warning about I Saw the Devil, though, it's insanely violent and remorseless in some respects.

I'm a huge fan of Korean cinema, and Oldboy is one of the best. Most of that trilogy is very well done, as well. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is another great movie, but Lady Vengeance tries too hard to be artsy. In terms of 13 Assassins, I seriously need to see it. Apparently, it's on netflix, but I don't have an account. Gonna keep my eyes open at the video stores. Takashi Miike is notorious for directing gruesome movies. Movies like Ichi the Killer and Imprint are just....gross. But 13 Assassins looks like it has a great story.

I loved it so much I recently bought the BluRay version. Not everyone likes it, but I would be surprised if many in the crowd that frequents this thread wouldn't love it. :)

It's disturbing and crazy violent, but really well made. I preferred Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, myself. It traded some of the violence and horror for humor.

from Chan-wook Park

9/10 oldboy
7/10 Lady Vengeance
6/10 thirst
5/10 Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
5/10 Three... Extremes (his segment cut)

Go and watch Drive as soon as you can. I wouldn't call it the best movie of the year (although repeated viewings may change that) but for what it was meant to be, it's pretty much perfect.
The intensity is suffocating, the violence is incredible even without showing the gore in every scene, the movie looks utterly beautiful - especially in the night scenes, and as muted and laid back the main character is (well, most of the time...) I'm sure most people here will find things in him to identify with, even if none of us can ever become as cool as Ryan Gosling (and you can't even hate him for it, he's so good in this movie). Oh and the soundtrack is amazing, too, both the original score and the songs.

Oh and for some reason I got this urge to dig up GTA 4, to just start to drive around at night while listening to Journey or Electro Shock...

Shit. I wanna see this. The trailer looked awesome, then I saw the reviews it was roping in over on Rotten Tomatoes. I was totally surprised. It's at 94% now. I may check it out this weekend.

*edit* I just found out who the director was. Nicolas Winding Refn is an incredible director. You need to check out Bronson and Valhalla Rising.

I'll do that as soon as I can!
You get your tickets in the meantime ;)

I think I'm gonna have to get this on repeat during work tomorrow...

I had no idea this was a Winding Refn film. Now I need to see it ASAP. I've reviewed both Valhalla Rising and Bronson in this thread. Valhalla is a remarkable movie. It's powerful, yet a lot of reviewers claimed it was hideously narcissistic. I don't agree. It's probably the best movies about the Crusades ever made. It's about a mute, Nordic warrior who blindly joins a group of Crusading Christians searching for Jerusalem. It's deathly quiet, and beautifully shot, while retaining a lot of tension.

Bronson, on the other hand, is based on the life of Michael Gordon Peterson, who has been dubbed as "Britain's most violent inmate," due to his inherent love of fighting. It's probably one of the most vivid portrayals of insanity, I've ever seen captured on film. It's hilarious, even though the topic is brutal.

Anyway, thanks for the review. I'll check it out this weekend!

13 Assassins- 9.7/10

Just as I imagined. If I had to sum this movie up in one sentence it would be "jaw dropping 40 minute fight scene." I think that shatters records for longest battle in cinema. About five minutes into the battle I'm thinking to myself "this must have been the most physically straining movie to have starred in." The 13 were constantly in motion, swinging weapons, running and scaling obstacles. It was really an impressive display. The movie is filled to the brim with great writing and dialogue. The cinematography is absolutely stunning, too. I didn't exactly understand part of the ending, to the point where I had to wikipedia it.
The guy they find in the woods, dangling in a net, was apparently immortal? Wikipedia claims throughout the movie it is hinted he isn't human, but I never really saw that. Other managing to survive having a sword thrown through his neck and his stomach slashed, but that's not until the end. It says he's a "mountain spirit" or "demon." Then again, I'm totally unfamiliar with Japanese folklore.
