Movie Reviews 2.0

Dune is like one of the best pieces of science fiction literature, although I've given up on its sequels. But if you have any interest in sf, then get it immediately.

No unfortunately I have not read the books yet. I first got exposed to the world of Dune through Sci-fi and I thought it was a load of tosh. Maybe I have not done it justice. Is it worth checking the books out? I have never really read any of the scifi-ish books unless Michael Crichton et al count....

You should certainly read at least the first three Dune books. These are "Dune", "Dune Messiah" and "Children Of Dune". The Lynch movie is a flawed, but interesting interpretation that Herbert himself actually liked (except for the ending which didn't make sense in the context of Dune's ecology). Probably a fuller and more faithful interpretation are the two Sci-Fi mini-series of "Dune" and "Children Of Dune", though they still have their issues. Both make a lot more sense after having read the novels, and when you have, you'll realise why the books are praised and the movie/series adaptations are lacking.

Umm, I remember reading a spring 1985 interview with Herbert where he called the Lynch film a total piece of shit (paraphrasing), which it clearly is.

you don't like the audio weapons and rain on Arrakis withing months of arriving? My favorite part is the opening sequence where the princess fades out after he monologue then FADES BACK IN with an "oh by the way" add on. So freakin' cheezy.

Yes, the sets were drop dead gorgeous, but the movie was garbage.

Well, it was that Paul folded space to bring the waters of Caladan, his family's traditional home world, to Dune. And, yea, the weirding modules were one of that idiot Lynch's little "germ" ideas. I've said for years, how Lynch has ever garnered any critical recognition is a mystery to me. I think I hate every last thing he's ever done.

Cheers for the book titles. Let me see if I can order them tonight. :)

That's a shame, Elephant Man still stands as one of the best movies I have ever seen. I also liked Wild at Heart, but some of his later efforts, Lost Highway for example, left me cold...

Also his TV series, Twin Peaks, was fascinating TV watching. Although the movie wasn't nearly so good.

I'm flabbergasted how anyone could like at least Elephant Man though. :)

SB

Twin Peaks (TV) was interesting at first, but it became clear after a bit that he had no plan for the plot...

wot even eraserhead?
I do agree he is overrated

Whilst ive prolly seen more films than anyone else on these forums, I rarely go to the cinema.
Had to make an exception to see avatar since Ive never seen a 3d film (excluding the old colored glasses ones) pretty good film 7/10

it took about 1/2 hour to get used to the 3d though, I think its due to my eyes trying to focus on something onscreen and not being able to bring it into focus.
Definitely like motion detection was this generations defining feature, 3d gaming is gonna be the big thing of the next generation of consoles

Saw Avatar ... nice looking, shame about the script. Predictability is one thing, poor characterisation and plotholes quite another.

Him sleeping with her when he knew they bonded for life and he could never really stay with her. The sudden dereliction of duty of the chopper pilot during the raid and the fact she got away with it scot free. The even more sudden treason and desertion by the chopper pilot, etc etc.

A simple tweak to the script would have improved it immensely. Make the intentional harming of the Navi without need of self defense illegal. If the war plan of the company is a secret which they simply planned to cover up you have more room for intrigue, some real reason for the desertion, etc. Also it explains why the planet wouldn't be nuked from orbit in the near future.

As for the 3D effect, my sister had to leave because she got nausious. Personally I think it looked good but I did sometimes get annoyed by seeing halo'd edges (instead of simply out of focus edges) whenever I wasn't looking where I was supposed to be looking.

@MfA good points actually. Now that I think about that movie objectively those are some glaring plotholes. But those plotholes I can live with.

Him sleeping with her when he knew they bonded for life and he could never really stay with her. The simple answer to that is well he is a dude haha and he was thinking with his other brain!

Those don't seem like very big plotholes...

Lots of people sleep with people they shouldn't be knowing full well the consequences.

They probably wouldn't nuke the planet for fear of blowing up the precious "unobtainium" (LOL).

They could've given a little more backstory regarding the company and how secret their little operation is; perhaps there are some deleted scenes dealing with this?

The chopper pilot seems to be the biggest plothole.

All in all I really enjoyed the film and hope it does very well.

Meh ...
Sleeping with a girl who thinks you are going to marry her and then ditching her might be common, but it's still out of character for Jake Sully at that point in the movie where he is basically on the road to redemption already.

Nuking from orbit is just an expression, they can throw down kinetic energy weapons too (hammer of the gods). Or poison the atmosphere, whatever. Basically they started a war they can not win, even with gaia's help, this ain't no starship trooper's world with biological anti-spaceship guns.
