Movie Reviews 2.0

My dad could see 3D just fine with the 3D glasses over his normal glasses. These were the polarized RealD glasses.

Crank 2 8/10
So over the top and crazy that I couldn't help but smile throughout most of the movie. Like the first Crank this does not stop for a breathers  Funny stuff.

What was your score for the 1st movie because I thought it was ridiculous that movie lol. That they came out with a second movie just beggars belief at least for me!

Saw Sherlock Holmes : 8/10 Pretty impressed. Enjoyable though the English accent was a bit hard for me to understand.

Avatar 5.5/10 + 2 for the 3D so a 7.5/10.

The 3D has a few problems in places, but it really is an awesome experience. I wouldn't want to see certain types of movies done that way until some of the problems are fixed, but for a sci-fi effects driven movie it's great.

Jennifer's Body 5/10

B movie that isn't the worst I've ever seen, has moments, but overall doesn't work. Also has a terrible climax and finale.

500 Days of Summer 3/10

What a huge piece of shit. That movie is hipster pandering trash. It's like a bunch of suits got together with some psych majors and carefully designed a movie for young hipster audiences. It's quirky and tries to be artsy, but basically it's insulting, shitty and insincere. Maybe I should have said 1/10.

GI Joe 4/10

Hilariously terrible.

I'd probably give it the same score, I think the first one might have been a bit better though. Yeah the ending in the first movie didn't really scream for a sequel and I was also thinking it was a bad idea, but I had fun while watching it anyways!

I found it to be cute and nice. :???:

Agreed, it really struck a chord with me. In fact, it's probably in my top 10 of 2009, and I'll certainly be picking it up on BD when it's released (this month I think!). I enjoyed the characters and the story and I was genuinely interested in whether it'd work out between them, plus the non-chrono running was fun. Ending was a little weak, but that's about it for me.

I guess it helps that I'm totally in love with Zooey Deschanel

Not a movie review/critque, but a review/critique of how people rate things.

I've been noticing an interesting trend in rating over the past few years...

How is it, that on a scale of say 1-10, that someone will absolutely pan a movie and describe it as being horrible or bad...

Yet they will still rate it a 5.5/10 or 6/10 or whatnot. Basically their review has called out the movie as being bad/horrible/waste of time and money/etc. But they still rate it as above average?

I just got done reading an extensive review of a movie elsewhere, where someone totally ripped a movie a new hole. Yet at the end they gave it a 6.5/10 rating. Basically rating the movie as an above average viewing experience...

I wonder if this is a symptom of people now days not wanting to call a turd a turd (as it might hurt someone's feelings?). It's just so weird...

Regards,
SB

I use 4-10 scale. In any case reviews mostly aren't done with full scale anyway, instead more like how many points it loses from the top. Try to find a video game review site/magazine that gives a game score 50/100 and calls it average, maybe there are some, but not many. giving absolute averages works better with the 1-5 star scale. Hmm maybe I should use that instead...

Just watched the computer animated film, 9. I'd rate it as a 6/10. Some of the design was pretty interesting, and it didn't mind watching it. Didn't like the voice actors and the story didn't really make a lot of sense. It had a premise, but not much of a plot, and the ending was kind of incoherent. I thought it would be complete shit, but I'd say it was mediocre.

I suppose people are using IMDB scale, where a 5.x means generally quite crappy. :???:

Just watched Doubt last night and it was excellent. 9/10

Edit: sorry 4.5 stars out of 5 :)

Or the analog to school grades where anything below 60% is an F.

damn I went to the wrong school then, anything below 70 was failing for our school (and our graduating class had the highest credit requirements of any class for our school ever ..)

That was my college (no Ds, ABCF), but most US schools either use a curve or a 10 pt system. Some use 7 point systems still, but they give easier tests :)

"Whip It" - 8/10. Nice little coming of age/comedy film with Ellen Page who sneaks away from her mother's obsession with beauty pagents in order to join an all-girls roller-derby team. I'm really warming to Ellen Page as she grows. She's got an element of stillness in her performances. I'll be looking out for her in the upcoming movies "Inception" (Christopher Nolan) and "Super".

"The Time Travellers Wife" - 8/10. While this is being pitched as a love story (like the book before it), this movie is actually a science fiction story in the most classical sense. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams give great performances as the man who uncontrollably slips backwards and forwards in time, and the girl/woman who's life is intertwined inexorably with his own. Hollywood resisted the temptation to screw around with the book too much, and have ended up with a great film that works well despite the fact that one of the characters does not live his life linearly.
