Movie Reviews 2.0

Anyone saw Avatar? Any impressions?

I'm going to see it in 3D somewhere between next week (releases today here) and the New Year I think. Even if the game is bullocks (though reviews seem decent), I'm sure as a 3D experience it should be quite impressive.

Inglourious was OK, I thought. A typical Tarantino film with a couple of very good scenes loosely meshed together with plenty of dross and a meandering and pointless 'storyline'.

That said, one of my friends is a huge fan on Tarantino and can't stop going on about this film. Wish he would!

Anyone saw Avatar? Any impressions?

Just came back from the theater. Saw it in 3D btw.The movie rocked! The story is highly predictable but the Effects (an dthe whole mood, sound etc..) are just incredible. Weta, ILM, Framestore,StanWiston, Uncharted etc and everybody who worked on this did a phénomenal job!
Gonna catch it next week in IMAX 3D.

Whats the 3d glasses nowadays like?

Because im one of those blind folks wearing em regular glasses, is it uncomfortable when wearing the 3d glasses over the regular ones?

edit - cant wait til Saturday! going to watch avatar imax 3d :D

I'm wearing glasses too at the moment (haven't gotten round to contacts lately :D), and was wearing them also when I went to see UP in 3d, but I didn't have any problems.

Is this some sort of humour or are you confused with the name. It's Jackie Brown.
Right you are. Yeah, I muddled up the title.

Anyway, Terminator Salvation THAT bad? Seems hard to comprehend!

G.I. Joe was my first ever time I walked out of a movie theater during a screening. Well, I had to do it once during, uh, Independence Day I think, because my bladder was about to explode on me, but I did go back in there after I'd taken care of my pressing need. GIJ is the worst action movie I've ever seen I think. It's far worse than either Rambo 2 or 3 - the latter which was totally ludicrous I might add - or say, Red Scorpion or any number of other real stinkers. Can't see how T-S would somehow beat them all. But okay. People's taste is different, which probably is a good thing too on the whole. :)

Mize is off to find 3D cinemas...haven't been to the cinema since Star Trek...(am I an ubergeek?)

Saw the 3D Avatar today. I liked it. The story is quite captivating altough very predictable. The visuals are very nice. It's easy to enjoy movie like this, just don't expect any surprises at any point during the movie. Dances with wolves goes scifi.

2.5/5

GI Joe was a better movie than T4, IMO.

Well, there was soom boobies in T4... Ummm. I think that's about all the good I can say about it compared to GI Joe. I'm not sure I'd say GI Joe was a better movie though, I think they are both worse than the other. :D

How will the Blu-Ray for Avatar work? Will it still be 3D? Will the disc ship with glasses? What if several people want to watch the BR movie?

There are standards already worked out for 3D on BR - you only need the data and the player/TV can then use any of the possible formats for the viewing. Glasses are an accessory of the TV/projector that you want to use, whether it's realD or shutter glasses or anything else. All I'm sure is that you're gonna need a 2x speed drive, so PS3 probably qualifies as well.

And I'm sure you'll be able to watch the movie in 2D if you don't have special equipment.

According to Wiki all BD players will be 3D compatible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Ongoing_development

"The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players." [111] Also, according to Sony, Playstation 3 consoles will be eligible for a firmware upgrade to display the 3D discs.

Actually I think it's just poorly written, I think they mean the discs will be backward compatible ... in the sense that they can be played in 2D on a normal Blue-Ray player. Only the PS3 will likely be forward compatible.

The important part of that is...

an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players.

So while they all support the H.264 AVC, it's quite likely they don't all support the necessary extension.

Although I'm sure as long as you can upgrade the firmware, and if the company is willing to provide a firmware for a EOL machine, and if the machine is powerful enough to support the extension...that you'll be able to enable support.
