Movie Reviews 2.0

300 2 looks boring as hell ... such a wasted opportunity. The war at best is good as a back drop, but the story of a fictional war as a whole seems to me to leave little room for characters IMO.

300 Spartans staging an assassination mission during the war dirty dozen style ... now that would have had potential.

A 'sequel/prequel' to 300?

Wow, the Hollywood studios really have jumped the shark.

Something makes some money? Cue an immediate FX-laden sequel, regardless of how weak a storyline you bother to bolt together.

You can see why Spielberg et al are saying that the film industry is imploding.

World War Z - 8/10.

I've watched 28 days/weeks later, dawn of the dead.. even shaun of the dead so didn't really expect anything new but was holding my breath from start to finish. It was surprisingly a good thriller.

Also.. Its about god damn time humanity fought back against sprinting undead hordes :devilish:

I'm thinking you might know that in Gates of Fire such a scenario is fleshed out? Might even be a true story for all I know. Btw, I'd find it hard to recommend that book as greatly as it deserves.

Man of Steel = 8/10. Cavill is probably the best Superman we've had yet, both due to his physicality and his superior acting chops (relative to Chris Reeve's rather limited acting skill). The script is far from perfect, but the sheer scope of destruction during some of the action scenes was 'realistic' for the scale of power of the hero and his protagonists (edit: err, antagonists).

Man of Steel - wow. Yes it wasn't perfect but finally a movie that gets the epic factor of Superman right. Epic, grandiose, and sorry heteros but let me just talk about Cavill...
F'K HE'S HOT. Like, painfully hot. I actually can't remember anything he said, first cause well he wasnt exactly emoting much most of the time, but even if he did, I was too distracted.
That's it, going back to my cave now.

LOL My wife agrees with you completely, lb. I wish I had that physique, but even if I could've gotten it 20 years ago there's no way I would've put in the time/effort to build and maintain it.

It was the action trailer that got me really hooked and it delivered on that front, and gave me exactly what I was hoping for as I was watching the movie
"Don't end at the destruction of the ships, you've gotta give me a Superman/Zod one-on-one."
. However, I just found it a little over-egged in some places with the level of destruction - I kinda felt that other Supermen would have pushed out to some remote location to save the civilians.

Having said that, I think this was the most satisfying of the blockbusters this year, for me. I was a good reimaging and certainly played out Krypton more interestingly (for someone that only know Superman through the movies and not the comics).

Listen to last Friday's "Kermode and Mayo" podcast with the interview with Cavill. He talks about the regime that he had to in order to get in to that shape, especially the "shirt off" scenes. Basically it sounds completely unsustainable for anything but a movie.

Oh don't be silly. With regular and correct exercise, and diet, it is very much possible to sustain a certain physique. And a lot depends on genetics. It's all about balance.
Cavill had to build his body, which took a lot of energy. Look at him in Immortals (no really, look, i just did  ), he was fit but lean.
It will be relatively easy for him to keep it at a certain level now.

As I said, listen to his description. For the shirt off segments not only did he need to continue to train, but also had to lean out at the same time. A certain level is sustainable, sure, but likely not to the extents represented in the movie.

On a whim I bought The Hobbit 3D this weekend, and then first watched the regular one in the living room, and then the 3D one on my small 27" TV. Between the one in the cinema, the one on my regular TV, and the one on my humble little 270 euro 3D LCD tv (Passive) the latter was the best looking by a huuuuge margin. I was shocked how much better the 3D was here, and how much it improved the way the movie looked. Maybe the camera technology really isn't up to 48 frames I don't know, but they sure as hell managed to make good on it on this 24 frames BluRay version.

I also now wish that I could see the whole six movies this way, after the other (and not know yet how horrible the Frodo and Sam sections were going to be ... )
