Movie Reviews 2.0

Been in a Korean film mood. Top 3 modern Korean movies:

1. I saw the devil - 10/10 - perfect revenge movie in so many ways. Amazing direction and pacing.

2. Man from nowhere - 9/10 - Great action, most adorable little girl and an interesting storyline.

3. Tidal wave - 9/10 - Best disaster movie I've ever seen. Roland Emmerich should take notes. You actually care about the ~10 main characters and their plight.

I think I've seen 1., but Old Boy is still my favorite.

Talking about Korean movies, for those who are just as unaware of upcoming movies as me ... a Spike Lee remake of Old Boy, starring Samuel L. Jackson, is coming end of this year.

A WHAT?!
Wait.
i'm not sure whether to laugh or cry or be happy?

End of Watch- 9.5/10

I'm not exactly sure why this wasn't in the "horror" section on Netflix. It's terrifying. Not only the depiction of gangs in LA, but the brutal jock dialogue.

Leviathan- 9/10

I love underwater horror movies, and this one aged pretty well.

Lars and the Real Girl- 9.8/10

This movie is incredible. It's funny for about five minutes until it becomes pretty depressing, so don't expect a 2 hour comedy. However, Gosling is the man. I've literally loved every movie I've seen him in recently.

The Place Beyond the Pines- 9/10

Superb, well acted, and totally unpredictable. About a half hour into the movie you'll be pretty stunned.

Maniac (2013)- 7/10

Pretty good horror flick (as far as remakes go), shot entirely in first person. Elijah Wood can play a pretty good psychopath. The soundtrack is pretty incredible, too.

Hah! I'm glad you dug this movie. It's my favorite horror movie ever. Choi Min-sik is incredible. If you like that, check out the Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy is the most famous of the series but I'm partial to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

I neglected to mention I watched John Dies at the End. 7/10 Pretty funny/weird horror movie, skating the line of the completely nonsensical.

The new trailer for the Oldboy remake was released. Initially, I didn't like what I saw, then I watched it a few more times and it seems pretty appealing, but a lot of liberties were taken it seems. The original is one of my favorites so I'll have to check this out.

It's red band, just a warning.

Did you already saw it?? Iam sooo waiting for it!! How is it?

I think the best way to sum it up is like this - after you leave the theater you'll probably feel sorry that you're not 12 years old, as now you can't just go play Jaegar vs. Kaiju with your pals.

It's not the best movie ever though, has its share of small flaws and there's no Robert Downey to carry it through everything like he did with Avengers last year. Although it's probably better this way.

But it is an exhilarating experience that you'll keep smiling through :)
It's free from the stupid 'humor' or overly complicated and ultimately irrelevant plotting of the TF movies, and refreshingly light-hearted (although there are a few genuinely moving scenes too).

I can understand that they are playing a bit with the plot twist, it probably wouldn't fly with the studio and American audiences ... also too many people already know it ... that "whoever you are" bit of dialogue grated on my nerves though, too bombastically brought, he's not supposed to be a hollywood action hero type.

I caught the Seventh Son trailer on youtube after watching it, I get a bit of a 13th warrior low budget fantasy movie vibe from it ... but I liked 13th warrior, so that doesn't worry me.

I just got hold of the vengeance trilogy so I'm planning on watching them, including Oldboy, this weekend hopefully. Not going to look at anything of the remake until I have done so.

Man of Steel.

It was OK. I don't know if it was more or less faithful to the comic books than previous movies/shows, but I thought it made a bit more sense. I did find it a bit shallow, especially for a 140-minute movie.

Just seen Pacific Rim.

I really enjoyed it and my son was blown away!
It very much is 90% of action and 0.01% of love scenes, the rest is usual stuff.

9/10 for it's category if you like big robots or big monsters :)

Pacific Rim - 9.5/10 I took .5 off for a few minor quibbles I have with the movie, but otherwise this is the summer blockbuster to see this year. The little boy in me who used to love going to weekend matinees to see Godzilla movies with his dad loved this movie. The Hong Kong fight alone is worth the ticket price. Go see this movie!!
