Mixed Information on Consoles or How I learned to loathe PR *spin off*

Can't help wondering if MS are hoping that the entire Xbox brand will benefit from the kind of "halo effect" that I've been repeatedly told helps Nvidia in the GPU market (having the fastest $9000+ GPUs makes it easier to market mainstream cards).

Will it make the x1s sell 10 times as much, no.
But it could help improve the brand in general, which can also have longer term benefits.

I tend to agree.
The longer the generation the more power will matter. Coming in at the top at the end of a generation isn't going to provide much benefit. But if this gen goes another 4 years, then it's going to have an effect over the long term.
Certainly better than being weaker and having worse exclusives.

That power only becomes useful for all games once Microsoft to retire support for the Xbox One. That's what, around ~30 million Xbox One owners as now? How many base Xbox One/S machines will there be just a year after Scorpio launches? For the forseeable future won't see games that can't run on Xbox One. Like Pro, you'll get prettier versions of the same game as the console's base platform. That's fine if graphics are you thing but I don't think consoles owners care that much about graphics. This forum is not remotely representative of console gamers en masse. :nope:

was thinking more users would be 4K owners, the more 4K owners should have an effect of XBO and PS4 ramping down. I have a hard time believing that they will continue to be the #1 SKU for 4K owners 2-3 years from now. It doesn't even matter if they play the same games, or that the baseline XBO is weaker because we are now only comparing 4K performance.

I agree this forum isn't representative, we look at the technology, which includes gameplay, most post will be around the graphics area, but from what I've seen people don't under value gameplay related stuff.

I would say from someone who's not a big gamer that, the general people you are talking about seem to care more about graphics than people on this forum.
COD, madden, FIFA, most of the biggest games each year are all about slight improvements in gameplay, but mostly about how they look better, and sell well for it.

Is it the market, or the studios that push it? I don't know but that's how it seems to me.
I think your under valuing graphics to the general public, more than people here under value gameplay to them.

How much of a step up in graphics they consider worth the extra expense is the million dollar question.

I can't express how dumb this is.

Wasn't the obvious alternative option for Microsoft to correctly communicate the technical details themselves? Which goes back to to my point from the outset of why were DF even involved here? Why introduce a wildcard into your PR process. Again, who does that!?!
I agree that the messaging has been unnecessarily clumsy at times but imo giving DF an interview was a good idea.

DF has the 'street cred' for this sort of thing and MS already reached out with the OG XB1 to redirect the messaging early in the generation. A follow up visit from my perspective was in order especially considering some of the statements in that original article that haven't help up very well.

This time around there was an opportunity to build hype for a very good product, do an early victory lap of sorts (most powerful home console this generation and return to XBOX brand roots) and most importantly leverage DF credibility and head off any possible lingering questions.

It seems to me anyway that Microsoft is very aware of the perception core gamers have post XB1 reveal and early missteps. Something I hadn't considered till now is Scorpio allows Microsoft to rebuild brand credibility ahead of next generation's inevitable arms race. If they can turn the momentum around prior to new platform, the division can use that success to argue for bigger budget and more risk from corporate.

All in all I think it's pretty smart and I see little downside to the approach MS is taking.

Frankly their decision making has been very good for some time in nearly every area other than growing the library of exclusives and even that is open to interpretation.

It may be XBox core consumer isn't attracted or interested in rounding out the library as much as having some very good first exclusive titles like Forza, Gears and Halo and the best possible experience for big third party multiplatform titles along with best in class services.

This part is becoming more evident to me as time goes on. Even if those 3P exclusives hit XBO, the customer base wouldn't buy it. I'm looking at Reddit threads for all these indie games, few views, fewer replies.

Yep, there's some differences between playstation fans and xbox supporters atleast in my opinion in terms of priorities. Nothing wrong with either camp but too often it's reduced to shouting down or belittling preferences without appreciating that there are genuine differences in values.

Giving interviews to the media is what you expect. What DF had was more than an interview, they were allowed to reveal the core technical specifications of a new Microsoft product - apparently with no oversight. As I already said, and which DF stated themselves, this was "unprecedented". I don't think there is a word in the English language that covers it (the Germans probably do though!). I can't think of any other tech company doing something like this. I'm still.. :runaway:

It may be unprecedented, but it's not that stupid. Most gamers don't care about specs. Some console do fine without talking about specs at all. So MS have turned to the specialist audience for this specialised info, rather than a global press release (that dumber coverage could screw up communicating!). They are also targeting the specialist software developer press to talk about their software. And they'll talk to the gaming press about their games, I'm sure.

Managed press releases might be a better way to do things in this day and age, where a single uncoroborated sound bite can be Tweeted into 'fact' before it can be fixed, leaving an embarassing PR chase to patch up. This way, MS can check their message in the one source, and then leave the internet to spread the word from that one source. It seems to make some sense on paper. They ought to ensure they have a final check of the copy before it goes to press though.

doing something new and unprecedented doesn't have to equate too bad.
a break from the norn can bare very good results.
after e3, once all the different reveals that makes up Scorpio has been made, then can truly judge just how badly or well it all worked for them.
DF spec release is just the first step.
gamesutra is the next

Easy. What's the readership of DF? What kind of traffic do they get?

That's your answer.

Imagine Apple going to DF to exclusively reveal the new iPhone in detail, before they even have a conference to show it off, with their own presentation and messaging.

Super weird.

seems to have got out to the wider press some how.
it's the specs, guess when the article about the development side comes out tomorrow, people are going to say how strange it was that a development site got to do it.

the people who are interested in specs, I suspect know who DF is.
so far so good.

guess I just don't find it weird, much less super weird.
just different.

that would be super weird, only because Apple has been teaching the world the master class of the reveal.
MS has got some ways to go my friend ;)
They need all the help they can get; people generally aren't hyped about MS products, and I'm being respectful as I can be about them. Trust me, I could be using M$.

When it comes to console reveals I'd agree, but I think the Surface team has been doing pretty good lately for those announcements.

Panos Panay is the man!
