I know there's a perpetual 'MS is buying Sega' rumor, but I think with recent financial reports taken into consideration, my money is on SquareEnix. They have a great portfolio of games and franchises, including all the old Eidos stuff. Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and most importantly, Legacy of Kain. Oh yeah, and Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

If they do acquire SquareEnix then Microsoft would be producing more PS5 exclusives than Sony, when combined with the Zenimax Studios exclusives. :runaway:

Tecmo-Koei seem in rough shape given how they've been handling things post-Itagaki. Idk, any struggling Japanese devs? From Software?

Platinum got investment from Tencent, so they're probably okay.

Artoon / AQ?

Tecmo-Koei or From would both be good purchases. Tecmo-Koei in particular, since they have a wide portfolio of action and strategy IPs. From Software I think has some of it's IPs tied up in exclusivity deals.

How about team ninja? A proper dead or alive xtreme with no bullshit gacha and grinds would be pretty nice.

I know because I really hated that game until I put a 100% save from someone in the internet to my PS4 pro, and it instantly became way more fun.

Btw how about buying part of square Enix? They have like 5-6 developer studios under them. Crystal dynamic, eidos, and various divisions labeled 1-2-3-4-5

Oh! MISTWALKER seems to be in zombie mode! Buy them, and we could get something awesome again like Lost Odyssey on x360

Oh oh oh! Also buy suda51 studio! Need more weird shit like no more heroes, lollipop chainsaw

Ah! Also buy mizuguchi's studio and let him make yet another transcendence interactive experience. Although I prefer if his studio was bough by Sony or ubisoft and make transcendence VR experience instead. Or just port child of Eden to VR

Team Ninja is under Koei-Tecmo. :) I'd love to see it for more Ninja Gaiden and DOA with a decent budget, but I think their Xbox ties effectively died when Itagaki left. That said, their development efforts with DOA6 were pretty dismal. Maybe they just don't have the talent anymore.

Maybe they also need to think hard about how they make DOAX if they feel they can't release the game in western markets because of highly questionable character designs. I'm sure there's a market for adult-only games, but when they have characters that are barely adults themselves (or even look the part) it makes you wonder about the people involved. :| I quite enjoyed DOAX 1 & 2 as volleyball games, but I think they fell off a cliff with how they went about DOAX3 game systems and characters.

The marketing on steam for doa xtreme is even more questionable. It put Marie Ross up top side by side with even more child-like version of it (but huge boobs) from "destiny child".

And yeah DOA6 was a huge disappointment. Although to be fair I only ever liked doa 2 and 5. Other DOA doesn't click with me, dunno why. Same with tekken, bough tekken 7 at launch and I really hoped I didn't buy it. Ugh PSN have no refund. Hmm although on steam even when I dislike a game I've bough, I didn't request refund. But if there's tech issues like HZD or the game makes me wanna puke (elite, Pavlov) I instantly look for refund.

Whoa I'm rambling

I doubt MS will purchase SE. I bet Sony would be involved - and SE has closer ties with Sony rather than MS. MS might purchase its western branch though.

Tecmo-Koei sounds interesting actually.
And yeah, I think MS won't release DOA because it does not want any political issues - and sexualized characters will certainly cause some trouble in the modern environment.

But I still believe there is some deal with Sega. MS needs some Japanese games like Final Fantasy but at the same time, it won't be able to ignore Nintendo consoles. I am not sure what MS can do honestly. From my point of view they should heavily push XCloud and PC in Japan to encourage more japanese developers to publish games to GamePass.

LOL. What if MS buys Konami's video game franchises? I bet a ton of people would freak out if MGS, Zone of Enders, PES, Contra, Castlevania, and Silent Hill became Xbox exclusives.

The IP isn't worth a lot unless you have mature teams to develop the games. Konami doesn't have the creatives that made those titles anymore.

They can continue to target western gamers. If they get enough of the big western franchises and gamers start buying more and more systems the east will have to start putting titles out on it.

Yea I kinda guess if its not too expensive they can buy it and spin up teams but that is a long play. I would think it be close to a decade before we start seeing games from MS with those ips aside from maybe the one or two dev teams konami might still have ?

From a GamePass perspective it may be worth it for Microsoft to buy some publishers solely for the back catalog....

It depends on the back catalog and what MS can do to enhance it. I think now anything pre PlayStation is extremely easy to emulate and most people will do that instead by downloading an andriod app or something. I think with playstation / n64 / dreamcast era games if MS can run the games but add 4k support and better filtering and what not it could be really popular.

But i mean more games are always better than less games. But i think for MS moving forward its about getting more and more heavy hitters coming to game pass to keep people subscribing

There is a lot going on in Japan on limiting foreign transactions and acquisitions of blue-chip Japanese companies (i.e., Sony, Toyota, etc.), even certain non-blue-chip companies are being protected under these new laws. Japan is trying to protect many of their homeland businesses and their proprietary works on reducing foreign dependency and things which they deem as a "national security interest." I believe Nintendo made this list of protected companies late last year. As such, Capcom, Konami, Square-Enix, SNK, and From Software, might be a challenge [now] to acquire if they’re protected under these new laws. If not, then Microsoft should go after Square-Enix or Capcom if they’re willing to be acquired, and the same applies to Sony if they’re eye-balling them as well.

Its not that black and white. There is a list of core companies with the biggest restrictions, a list of noncore companies with fewer restrictions and companies that don't have any restrictions at all.

For example Capcom has no restrictions placed on them at all.

There is a link to a Excel files with all companies and their ranking in that article.

Edit: There is also the question what is of interest to MS. The actual company, the IP, the teams, the technology? They don't necessarily have to outright buy a company to achieve their goals.

Thanks. Capcom and/or Konami would make a great asset for Microsoft. Square-Enix is so-so in book, even though the Final Fantasy series is quite popular. Sony should definitely secure From Software.

While I love the MGS games, I don't think they would be that good without Kojima's weirdness. I have a feeling that any western development house would turn into a standard-ish military shooter and that misses out on the whole point of MGS.

The fact we haven't seen a Castlevania game from Konami in 6yrs, is somewhat depressing. And the excellent animated series on Netflix just makes me want it even more.
