Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard King for $69 Billion on 2023-10-13

Thanks Dr Nick! Activision-Blizzard 2021's Annual report also has some interesting information. On page 14, it sets out that Apple and Google (mobile) platforms account for 17% of Activision-Blizzard's net revenue, Sony (PlayStaton) is 15% and Microsoft (Xbox) is not specified (because below 10%), with 82% being from Call of Duty. Which means Activision-Blizzard sold a lot more Call of Duty on PlayStation in its launch year than on Xbox.

GameIndustrybiz broke that down last year as: "Activision's shooter primarily sold on PlayStation platforms, with PS5 accounting for 41% of sales, PS4 29%, Xbox One 19% and Xbox Series X and S 11%.", so 70% for PlayStaton and 30% for Xbox.

The nextgen platform sales disparity is really surprising given the number of next gen consoles sold at that point would have been really close but Call of Duty on PS5 was outselling Xbox Series nearly 4:1. :???:

Keep in mind that GFK is retail only and GSD is with the digital sales in UK.
Xbox sells "more" Digital.

But since the playerbase on the PS is bigger anyway, you'll rarely see more overall sales on the Xbox side.

Good spot. Probably best to just use the data from Activision-Blizzard directly!

The new COD was only just released though this month, sales of the old one would have trickled into almost nothing.
Prior COD games are in Top 10 for Xbox though. So PlayStation gamers don't play/buy COD.

Historically, COD has been in the top 10 of PlayStation games in the month of September if it was in the top 10 for Xbox. For example...

The trend goes back quite a few years although from time to time if the COD title isn't one of the better ones it won't show up in Sept. In 2019, for example, COD BO4 didn't show up for either PS4 or XBO and in 2018 the same happened for COD: WWII. Basically if the particular release of COD is considered a good one it'll rank in both, if it's not it generally won't rank in both in Sept. That said, it's still also almost always either the #1 or #2 in the rolling 12 months chart in Sept. So titles like COD: Vanguard and COD: Infinite also didn't chart in Sept. for either platform.

So basically, what is relatively new is it still showing up on Xbox but not simultaneously showing up on PlayStation. You have to go back pretty far to see that happening in NPD.

You can however start to see a recent trend. Up through 2020, COD has ranked similarly in the NPD PlayStation charts as it has in the Xbox charts (2020 had it at #6 on PS and #5 on XB). However, in 2021 there was a rather sharp deviation from that (#9 on PS and #5 on XB). And then this year as we see, COD doesn't chart on PS while 2 COD titles still charted on Xbox.

So, potential signs of declining interest among NA PS owners starting in 2021. Basically before MS announced their potential acquisition of COD. Speculating here, but it might be due to all the scandals hitting Activision-Blizzard at the time. And if more of the casual COD players are on PS due to just PS having a much larger user base (PS4+PS5 versus XBO+XBS) I could see a lot of more casual players deciding not to buy it due to those scandals.

Regards,
SB

You're missing that prior COD titles are in Top 10 for Xbox but nowhere on the list for PlayStation 5, hence the statement that it seems PS5 Gamers don't buy or play COD.

Also that "*" Disclaimer applies only to NBA 2K23.
Sony gamers already bought it... Get in early because they are rabid fans. ;)

The go to numbers are the sell through. It'll be obvious in ActiBlizzard's financials where the game sells well. No idea of source data but from a first Google, (trusted source, Nov, 2021)

"Activision's shooter primarily sold on PlayStation platforms, with PS5 accounting for 41% of sales, PS4 29%, Xbox One 19% and Xbox Series X and S 11%."

That's UK only, but clearly there's all sort of snippets one can quote to make an argument one way or another. Absence of an old COD in a top 10 in NPD isn't particularly indicative of anything, particularly as it's a relative placement dependent on what other titles are available for the platform. Aren't there three titles that are exclusive of PS there, pushing down other titles?

Looks like Destiny and even ARK is more popular than COD:

Let's get serious for a second. CoD is important to Sony. They wouldn't be crying otherwise. So what? It's not damaging enough to competition for them to lose CoD. If anything, it might balance the scales and increase competition if MS were to get ABK. The CMA has a right to be concerned with a large acquisition like this, but they would be foolish to block MS just to help Sony maintain their anti-competitive (higher prices, no day-1 subscription service, CoD marketing deals) top-dog status.
