Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic) and Sony on December 18 announced an agreement to jointly develop a Linux platform for digital home electronic devices.
The collaboration will target audio-visual products to provide shorter start-up times and improved response, said the companies in a joint statement. The source code will be made to available to the public for free.
The two companies are considering the establishment of a forum group based on the results of this co-development, with other electronics companies supporting this idea including Hitachi, IBM, NEC Electronics, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Sharp.
