It scares me what a beast the Wii is turning out to be.

Will it ever stop? Possibly, but not very likely.

Seems like the Germans don't buy very many consoles at all considering a population of ~80 million.

Compared to, say, Japan? The figures aren't that different, are they? Until MNG5, Japan wasn't so hot during the summer either, and if you added PS3 and 360 sales for both countries, you'd get comparable figures (some months, less even). Besides, the meat right now is in the handhelds, and those figures aren't here anyway.

EDIT: hmm, that would be comparing monthly vs weekly sales. Oops! :D

Canada, for instance, is selling more consoles per month with less than half of the population. And per capita I think the US buys more than Canada.

There is quite a big difference between Japan and Germany.

Germany PS3:
May: 13,000
June: 8,000
July: 8,000

Japan PS3 (Media Create Numbers)
May: 36,000
June: 40,000
July: 68,000

Germany Wii
July: 26,000

Japan Wii (Media Create)
July: 350,000

Comparing with the UK, the Wii is coming up on 1,000,000 sold since launch. Germany is at 291,000. Up to June 9th in the UK the Xbox 360 had sold 1,19*,*** units in the UK, meanwhile in Germany they are at 281,000.

From what I understand, PC gaming is much more popular in Germany than console gaming in. From opinions of Germans in other gaming forums I visit, console gaming has a stigma attached to it.

it's also down to culture. pc online gaming for example would be preferred to console gaming because people like to socialise each other. consoles do have very good online support but that wasn't the case in late 90s/early 00s. because people once got into pc online, it is hard to turn them to consoles where they are likely to have perceptions that pc is best for online gaming.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I get the impression that simulation gaming in Germany is very popular. You can't usually get that sort of gaming on a console, and even on the odd occasion that you might, the amount of tweaking you could do would be fairly limited.

I think I compared monthly sales in Germany to weekly sales in Japan

Obviously then consoles aren't so hot in Germany, comparatively. Maybe it's connected to how popular the Atari and Amiga computers were for gaming compared to consoles in Germany. I remember these were huge in Germany compared to many other countries.

Which is quite ironic, considering their strict censorhip, which definately affects PC games the most in general

Which you can order on Amazon.uk or such anytime as the original uncensored version, provided you're over 18. And it's even still cheaper than buying it here.

Yep. There are other reasons as well, which I won't mention here ;)
