hi all, i´m looking for a vga box for my recently bought dreamcast and found this logic 3 vga box http://www.spectravideo.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=269&category_id= . It seems to work with every console or dvd, so i could use it with my gamecube and xbox, but it cost much more than other vga adapters, around 70$ ( others dreamcast only vgas can be found for 20$ i think ) . So does anyone own one of this or know if its worth the money?

thanks in advance

edit: it seems like the link doesn´t work, well the model is "Logic 3 LG1700 - VGA Box" ,here are two images:

Without a technical description of what it's doing, it's hard to classify it.

The reason Dreamcast VGA boxes work so well and cost only about $20 is because they're actually only adapters; the Dreamcast can produce a native VGA signal. The adapter just outputs it, and this leads to the best possible quality.

Some of these more expensive VGA boxes, especially those that work for multiple game consoles, transcode or upscan other signals into a VGA output. This leads to a noticeably worse-looking picture.

it only supports composite inputs, in which case I'd steer clear.

EDIT:

are there any adapters that accept native rgb (non - component) inputs?

thanks for the answers,

dural, that one you posted is dreamcast compatible? that´s my first priority. Working with the cube and xbox would be a bonus.

This VGA box is a bit of a mixed blessing. Opening the package, you find a fairly funky-looking (if not that solid)little device, with easy-to-connect Red/Yellow/White plugs at the back for each of the four possible AV inputs, so you can plug in your PS2/Xbox etc without the needfor any extra cables. Always a good thing.

You can also attach a PC to the VGA box, but for some reason this results in a dramatic loss of picture quality, so I wouldn't reccomend it.

Right, so the picture quality of console games then.

At first glance, its a bit dissapointing. Theres an odd blurryness as if you're watching a tv with a dodgy aerial at first glance, which is initially very dissapointing. However, sit back a couple of feet and take another look and you'll be blown away. For some reason, the picture looks fantasticly sharp and clear provided you sit a couple of feet away from the monitor screen.

I've tried the adaptor with a variety of games, X-box and PS2, and its worked perfectly fine with all of them. it will also play any games that support it in full screen 60hz, which is always a bonus. So long as you've got a decent pair of speakers, you'll get top-notch stereo sound quality too, better than most tv's can manage.

All-in-all, its a pretty good buy. Initially dissapointing, but it soon grows on you- and the fact that you can flick between inputs at the press of a button is a useful addition.

Doesn't sound like a real VGA box (ie: one that outputs in VGA natively). My buddy bought a 'universal' VGA box for his XB, and the quality was horrible.. IIRC it was transcoding SVideo to VGA, and it just looked like trash.

For DC VGA, ebay has some for cheap. Level Six also sells some for cheap as does Lik-Sang. Those would be your best bet as the logic 3 will not look very good because it isn't true VGA, it just converts the composite signal.

for PS2, we had a whole thread on the Blaze Vga Adaptor which is the only one that will give u a true VGA or progressive scan output on some games, make the game crash with some others, give u weird outputs on some others or just make your heads explode with 3DO games  just kidding...

Its amazing to see the fixation people have with VGA. I wonder if the next generation of consoles and their creators will feature VGA connections for those without HDTVs.

well, the fixation with VGA is that thats the way to go if u want to see better graphics but cannot afford to spend 90millions on a new Plasma TV. Also, at least here in europe, Plasma TV come with VGA connections as well as component and the others. so that would free up component inputs on your plasma screen.
My LCD TV has RGB Scart inputs, S-Video, composite (yuk!) and VGA but NOT pro-scan component, so the only way to play in pro-scan is to use the Blaze VGA Adaptor.
see, the fixation is that some people are amazed that such a simple thing is not more widespread, since it provides high definition outputs on potentially very cheap displays that are in pretty much every house this side of Nepal....
