Leaked Xbox360 specs: Fake?

Close but no cigar, say coders working on next-gen Xbox as new "leak" hits the net

Developers working on the Xbox 360 hardware have expressed doubts at the validity of a "leaked" bullet-point list of specifications purporting to be those of the Xbox 360 next-gen console and the accompanying Xbox Live service.

The console specifications, which were posted to the Internet this week, are largely consistent with previous leaks about the Xbox 360 hardware - but a number of unusual flaws in the document, pointed out by development sources, suggest that this is not an official Microsoft document.

"It's most probably a list made by someone who knows more about the official spec than the average hack, but I doubt it's an official Microsoft spec sheet," we were told by one developer who has experience of the new format.

"It's probably broadly in line with the spec that will be announced, but may be off on some of the finer details," he added.

What could be expected to change? I personally thought that the Mhz-figure for the GPU seemed "low" (ok not low but I expected a little more than 500 Mhz)

I have a feeling that this dev is a B3D member we all know and that they've read our spec thread to come to this conclusion.

the good thing about all this is that they wouldn't bother saying "close but no cigar" if the leaked specs were totally off.

(like say 256MB RAM ;) )

The only interesting bit out of that leak spec is the speed of the GDDR3.
If that part is true, 512 MB worth of 700 MHz GDDR3 memory are going to be in short supply for the PC next gen card, with Xbox 360 hogging all of them.

Why would someone (a dev "in the know") say it is "probably" off from the real spec? Wouldn't he know for sure? Sounds like the guy being quoted is himself, a bullshitter or some non a-list dev who has no more of a clue than anyone else.

Something changes in the specs every week these dayz.

That's because even dev studios only have alpha kits at the moment. But at this point of time they should be in a good position to provide a good guesstimate of what may be and what won't be.

Or maybe it's just one of a) Because he's under NDA he's not allowed to directly state anything about the spec, so "probably" is just his way of saying it, or b) He's pretty sure it's off, but doesn't want to look stupid incase MS have actually had to change the spec a little at the last minute and he's wrong in his statement.

Not saying that's what it is, but it's just more possibilities

You just have to remove one cpu core.

or maybe add a PPU.. ;)

(I know, I KID I KID) :D

A PPU is about 200$ :)
(edit:should be in the 190 Euro range)

2 core instead of 3 is the actual buzz.Nothing seems definitive yet.The extra ram comes at a price, you bet.

Why would a PPU cost $200? Makes no sense whatsoever. Ageia would LOVE to be in Xbox360, and I'm sure they'd do anything to be inside that console. At the volumes MS would be buying, I would be suprised if a PPU would cost $20. The don't need the full blown highend version of a PPU.

The Aegia guys said, that their ppu won't be in all of the next gen consoles, because the specs are already locked on one of them, surely this implies to X360. It really is not going to be there, but probably one of the cores can do pretty good job on their software engine.

Their marketing dept. claims 100 time more efficiency with a PPU than with a CPU.(at same frequency range ,i suppose)

or remove everything thats free from LIVE ;)

I hope not. I can't buy something as forced as Xbox live, I'm just hardwired that way. With the silver/gold plan, I know I'd get around to the gold service anyway.
