Where did he say that?

Yeah, and some people need to read a little more  and see that right now he has just made what everyone is doing: compilation of all rumors ;)

How? With MSAA there is plenty of redundant data to compress (subsamples with same colour).

A lossy algorithm is a possibility, but I'm not sure if I would want that.

The nice thing about a lossy algorithm is that you might be able to guarantee a minimum amount of compression. Then, if you can increase the color depth to compensate for such a lossy algorithm, and still come out ahead, you've won.

The way I see it, this is sort of like the MPEG4 issue. Sure, MPEG4 looks worse than MPEG2, but the cool possibility of MPEG4 down the road is using it to encode higher-resolution videos into less space, resulting in an overall improvement in image quality.

I can't see that guaranteeing a minimum amount of compression is a property that is desireable in this context. Algorithms that can't do this have the corresponding property that they can guarantee a certain maximum level of error (or no error at all), which overall seems more desireable in this case.

If going lossy guaranteed a huge gain at no to negligeable image degradation it could still be a good idea of course, but given the diverse range of imagery a gfx-card could be called upon to perform, I would be wary.

Just like S3TC.
Sure, a texture compressed looks worse than uncompressed, but for the same SPACE, you can get a texture that looks tons better.

then his friends need to be more careful in promoting their sources as all knowlegable.

You can, but there is no way to guarantee it. You can also get textures that simply don't compress well at all, and the act of raising their resolution won't fix the problem.

You need to be able to have some guarantee of image quality in any scheme that you are going to use for the colour buffer.

Once again, 4 pages of unsubstanciated BS about NV30..... If you can't tell anything because of NDA, then why post this stuff? It's all been seen before, and, as has been said, if you say it enough, does it become true?

Where elsewhere on the web have u seen anything at all mentioned about the aa & aniso alghoritms utilized by the nv30? Yes, even though the info is unsubstancial, it's still info...

NDA has nothing to do with it as not me nor the original poster of this are in any way associated with NVIDIA or signed an NDA with them.

It was just a minor addition to the already circulating rumours on the net about the specifications of the nv30, which we'll all know about soon enough (some of us earlier than the others though ;) ).

Sorry, alexsok, but all you have here is unsubstanciated rumor, nothing more..... and, no matter how many times you guys repeat this, it's not reality, it's not the truth, period. This is nothing more than mental masterbation...... only less satisfying! Kind of like nearbeer!

I wouldn't call it "unbsubstancial rumor" m8, not at all...

Nope. I'd spell it correctly. ;)

Just show me where nVidia has said any of this...... now I don't doubt there's some educated guesses here, and some of them may very well pan out..... BUT, the are still unsubstanciated, alex. But, if you keep repeating them, like Peter Pan did about not growing old..... they MAY come true!

Yes, the 'NV30', as codename of the chip, has been confirmed. :p :D

Yeah, and some people need to read a little more  and see that right now he has just made what everyone is doing: compilation of all rumors ;)

Let's see: first his undercover all knowing contact gives him "Tha Real Specks" of NV30. Then, 3 days later, the same contact gives him some "new and shocking" detailes. Considering that his all-knowing insider semi-NDA'ed spy source could not have possibly been wrong the first time, one can deducts that the new and shocking revelations are the result of an amazing 3-day redesign of NV30.

I shall reiterate an idea that I posted earlier:few people outside of the business know about the NV30. And those that know have signed a NDA almost certainly. I don`t know about them, but I wouldn`t violate mine just to have my info posted on some forum. If you talk to a friend about things like clock-rates, pipes, tmus etc., you usually point out that the info is not meant to b public. So take these "revealing" posts with a grain of salt 8)

Nvidia has been tightlipped on this product haven't they . Ah well I miss the old days sometimes
