SONY CONFIRMS PSP-PS2 CONNECTIVITY

Sony doing a Nintendo? Next we'll find out the PSP has two screens...

15:19 Sony's handheld PSP console will connect to the PS2 and PSX as expected, Sony marketing spokesperson Fumiya Takeno has confirmed in an interview with the Japanese business publication Mainichi.
Details on what this connectivity would afford to the gamesplayer were not forthcoming, although it was confirmed that, for instance, you would be able to play a game on the PSP while on the move and then continue on the PS2 or PSX when at home, a concept similar to that employed by Nintendo with GBA and GameCube.

In the same interview, Takeno explained that Sony's priority for the PSP was to produce new titles rather than rely on new versions of older titles.

well this means that you need to be able to transfer files between consoles.
trough usb cable to ps2 ?

Now it will be an awesome feature. ;)

I'd like to see FF:CC ported so more people can see what a great coop game it is.

...

This is pointless, you can connect anything to anything, with a proper driver support from either side. Only politics and lack of a market demand prevents it.

Let's see how many titles even bother to use this "connectivity" thing, because I don't see a point of it.

Hmm, lets see if Sony can make connectivity actually work.

Yep, the problem with the GCN-GBA connectivity is that the difference in power between them is so great that the possible functions for it leave a lot to be desired.

Perhaps the PS2-PSP can bring something different to the table? Either way, it´s not something I´m very interested on doing anyway.

Didn't we know they were planning on that when they announced the PSP? Mainly we just know they're planning on having a few options available at launch, which is cool 'n all.

A year after launch of PSP, when PS3 starts taking off, who's going to give a rat's ass about PS2 connectivity? Hyping possible uses in conjunction with another next-gen machine would seem to make much more sense than one at the end of it's life-span. Maybe that will still happen, though.

What if Sony decides to back up PlayStation 2 for 3 to 4 more years?

Even if they do, I'm guessing that after PS3 launches the PS2 will be backed up like PSOne after PS2 launched, basically as the ugly older sister to everyone's hot new date. Yes, it may well still be supported, (as Sony will definately want to milk it as a bargain console for awhile longer), but in the public mind nobody is really going to care about it, because all the hot new games will be coming out for PS3. It will be the console that parents get their kids for Christmas and many kids open with a sigh of disappointment, because they know all the cool kids are getting PS3's. (I'm exaggerating here, of course, but you get the point).

But once again, connectivity with PS2 doesn't neccessarilly preclude connectivity with PS3. I just personally feel that if that was the case they would want to be emphasizing that over the PS2 connection.
