Jesus, you really look for things to complain about. Where's your work, can I critique it for you?
I agree with Laa-Yosh on this. At first glance it looks quite good, but suddenly you wonder why a load of boxes of stacked up, and who smudged grey splodges over the pic. (Oh, that's smoke?). Looking at where the sun is on the horizon, buildings should be casting long shadows, yet they appear to have none at all. It's a weird looking game.

No you're right (although I disagree with the smoke comment, it looks pretty good to me), it does look a bit fishy with respect to the casting of the shadows buuuuuuuut, Laa-Yosh is consistently so pessimistic with this game, it just rattled me a bit. The lighting is a bit strange, but even despite all these little defects, I mean, it still looks pretty (at least to me)! Couldn't hurt to be slightly less pessimistic is all.

It could just be because of the depth of field doing wacky things with the engine. I don't know, I won't pretend to have the slightest idea about these things.

I just really want this game to turn out well. It looks like something that could be very good, hopefully as fun as say Panzer Dragoon was for me though probably a bit different.

In my experience Laa-Yosh is pretty 'pessimistic' about most games :p

This game is likely to incite a lot of ire because it was held up on a pedestal by it's developer. If they hadn't of talked it up so much, people wouldn't be so down on it.

In it's favour, it's parallax mapping on the stones is pretty awesome. Loads of depth there. Of course, that then looks silly when characters step on the cracks as though there's glass over the top. I've never liked excessive effects to drive the point home. I'd rather it was subtle and actually looked correct in scale to the people.

mmm... indeed. I guess the main problem is that they have to make it super-ridunkulous in order for the masses to notice that it's there in the first place. It's really too bad. :(

"And 10K soldiers on screen and 7.1 lossless sound and HDR and procedural water and normal maps and appropriate motion sensing control and 1024 (32x32) square km levels that take up 4 GB of disc room each and 1080p."

Yeah, this game has a lot of issues. But in the end, the real issue will be find anything to bash.

Yeah, especially about Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy XIII, some of the multiplatform stuff like Assassin's creed... Hm, wait a sec, I'm not pessimistic about these. Could be because they've shown good looking stuff...?

May be what people are saying is Lair has scope issue (Trying to do too many at the same time).

"I got here as soon as I could"

I don't see a big reason to rag on this game at this point as it's far from completion so it's likely to end up improving in many ways. Having said that, pointing out obvious flaws where others do not see them is productive as a learning experience to appreciate the finer details in games that do get these details correct.

Judging from this teams past games, they do great work graphically so I have faith it will turn out well.
(even if some of their members are idiots with some of their public statements)

It's actually due out very soon. Eggebrecht mentioned in Feb that development was in the polishing stage and even suggested that they would be finished a while before Sony wanted to put it on the shelves. June has been mentioned from SCE Spain.

...

well .. in that case ...nm

carry on :D

I'm the character modeler on pretty much all the Warhammer stuff, for example.
You worked on DoW? Loved the art style of that game even though the overall look is fairly crude. Very well utilized poly budgets. The necros in Dark Crusade look particulary nasty. Love their huge green guns.

And since when is pointing out the lack of shadows 'looking for things to complain about'?
Well.. Mabe because it's perhaps not the first thing you look for in an action title.

With that mcuh detail and that much stuff all over the place having shadows on everything would undoubtedly bog down the framerate a lot. Particulary if people start screaming for nonsense like self-shadowing shadows etc. Like you'd even see something like that on the little itty bitty soldiers in that screenie.

It's nothign that has any decisive impact on gameplay. And I don't think it's anything worth putting a lot of weight on. This screenie looks awesome in my opinoin. It's helping me to get excited in Lair and PS3 again after the warhawk debaclke.

If I as to complain about anyything it's that the color palette is so damn dull. Bump up the saturation FFS! Make the world vivid and interesting to look at instead of a dark fuzzy mudball..

Complaining about the smoke for example is just silly. There's absolutely nothing that differentiates the smoke effects in this game from over a hundred others. Other than they're likely even more complex than average.

Peace.

No, we've done the cinematic intro for Mark of Chaos, the WH fantasy game.

The problem is that those hundred games have been released like, 5 years ago. A PS3 game should do better, especially if the developer brags about it all the time...
