What's the cheapest motorised swivel camera currently out there? I think that motor adds to the cost a fair bit.
I have no sympathy for that particular decision. Nobody forced Microsoft to go with [strike]these extreme-low-res cameras, necessitating the [/strike]motor tracking. They could have just used [strike]decent camera sensors with[/strike] proper optics to capture a wide fov from a static angle.

edit: so apparently the camera res is specced as 640x480 right now. So WTF do they need the motor for?

The motor is for when you walk up close to the camera, outside it's field of view, like they did in the Forze 3 walk-around demo. I'm assuming that's what its for, anyway.

I can only assume they're trying to take a chunk of the Wii market, which is a completely different strategy than XBL was. Maybe I'm assuming too much but their focus seems to be precisely on the Wii demographic so far...

Nyah, they're trying to make Nintendo pull another rabbit out of their hat again next generation by taking away the WiiHD market.

Kinect is launching now to work out the bugs and gain some following, press, and mindshare so when it's implemented in its new form in the NextBox, it'll be polished. Just like Live. This entire thing is a Beta test.

With this kind of logic, PS2 was a beta for PS3, or first generation cars are the beta for later models in the same gen, etc.

I think it's a bit disingenuous.

Does anyone seriously still think that market even exists? I know very few people who owns Wiis who care about it being HD. It has been a long time since Nintendo tried to sell a console/handheld based on primarily graphical/tech upgrades and it has been working out well for them... I doubt they're going to change their plan any time soon.

And the idea that Microsoft would somehow doubt Nintendo's ability to come up with a new idea that is unrelated to the obvious graphical tech bump is absurd given Nintendo's track record.

If it's a beta test then it's definitely too expensive.

In that case, better sell your Nintendo stock now because there's no future console for them on the horizon.

What track record is that exactly? The Wii? Or the failed Gamecube one generation prior?

Too expensive? For hardcore gamers? Sure. For motion control loving casuals who are tired with their Wii and see a value proposition in better graphics + no controller + Live features, etc? No, probably not too expensive.

Keep in mind that even with Sony and MS climbing into this market, the hardcore market has been a failure on the Wii even though some concept ideas for the controller seemed promising. So what is MS doing? Going after the casuals with their dance games, and working to try to see if they can incorporate the tech into "real" games at a later time.

I wouldn't expect to see more than 2 games outside of Fable III that are marketed towards the hardcore gamer for this "round" of Kinect. If they are successful, or if their development shows promise, then we'll see it nextgen.

I would expect the Nextbox launch games to be Kinect-enabled. Just like the 360 launch games were Live enabled.

Until then, we'll see a smattering here and there with some minor implementations in certain games as a 'reward' to those who subsidized the beta test by purchasing revision version 1.0

So what? Their current platforms seem to be doing just fine :) The Wii was barely a new console in terms of hardware ;)

Why would you assume casual games are going to pay MORE? The conventional wisdom is that it's the opposite.

Anyways time will tell but I think it's a mistake pricing this so high. Market penetration is what Microsoft needs with this now, not a few extra bucks and potentially annoyed customers.

I said I'd be keeping an eye out on deals, and here's one hell of a deal. You can buy the Kinect for around $90 + Tax from Toys-R-Us!

Here's the details taken from SlickDeals.

Just tried it & it says promo code "Not Applied". :( I was considering the Walmart pre-order but have now decided to wait a little longer, will probably end up pre-ordering through Gamestop($50 up front, rest can be paid anytime up to launch).

I preordered at gamestop also. Put $25 down tho before they changed to $50. However I'm up to $75 bucks on it. want to have it paid off by Oct.

Thankfully this is really light year gaming wise for me. Def fable 3 , fall out new vegas and mabye DCU

I voted X360+Kinect for me+family.

I have a launch X360 that is shockingly still alive. I've been thinking of replacing it anyway, X360-S is tempting me as is, and Kinect intrigues me just enough to give it a try. The wife and kid having some fun with Kinect is a big plus too.

This isn't Kinect but I intend to buy it. It being a 250GB Halo: Reach bundle oooo lalalalalalalala! Digi will be so jealous! :p

None of the above, here. I wouldn't mind the $150, if it ever came to seem that I or my wife would ever use it. I'll be watching the reviews, looking to see if it's easy and fun. From what little I know, I'm not optimistic. I'm really more into 3d stuff, currently.
