Kinect buying intentions poll

What Kinect package are you buying?

Haven't pre-ordered mine yet, I'm thinking about waiting for the X360 + Kinect bundle. Although without a HDD, hmmmm.

Then again I have a bunch of 16 GB thumbdrives. Can you install games to thumbdrives also? Or is it only to HDD?

Regards,
SB

Provided your 360 likes them (it doesn't accept all of them), they behave just like a harddrive iirc. It's a big help for me personally, because the 20GB in my EU launch 360 is now finally becoming too small to get any additional games. So if I can find one or two cheap 16GB thumbdrives, that's going to be a huge increase for me and should last me a fair while. I only recently discovered I have two USB slots in the front of the 360, so I won't miss those.

That's good news, I'll have to try mine out when I get back to the states. Funny thing is, I think I only paid 19.99 for my Crucial 16 GB thumbdrives, they were on sale at Costco. If they work, that's 64 GB of storage for the price of the original 20 GB HDD. :D

Since its $149 U.S.D. I've put it off indefinately. I have to take into account the expected adoption rate and therefore support the peripheral would get when I consider what value it might have for me.
Yeah, if I had known how PSEye interest was going to be non-existent, and Sony weren't going to make anything based on those tech demos they showed (what was that Eye Spy game they had?), I wouldn't have bought one.

I should have included a wait-and-see option, but my thinking was just who has definite opinions, assuming anyone who doesn't vote is waiting and seeing!

Thus we can take from this poll
Im intelligently sane

bugger the cash, does it work (fullstop)
there is no lag, no lag I tell you

I doubt that I'll ever buy Kinect. I just don't see it offering anything of interest to me. The games where it excels are the type of games that I don't play and I don't see it offering anything extra to the games I like. I mostly enjoy story driven games or very tight control action games, so it doesn't leave much for Kinect. I live alone so no family fun games and I don't play games often with friends either.

So while it's always nice to get new things/gadgets, nowadays I actually have to convince myself that the purchase is atleast somewhat useful to me. My gaming hours are like 1/10th of what they used to be anyways...

My choice wasn't really covered, so I chose the one that seemed more appropriate. $150 isn't a deal-breaker for me, I've paid more for peripherals with even more limited applications. The software available doesn't justify the price for me though, since I have little interest in party games.

I'm interested in messing around with the technology a bit although I haven't seen any compelling applications yet (other than maybe what they are doing with the UI controls if that turns out to be good).

But I seriously don't understand how they can justify selling it for this price... the camera hardware is not very expensive. I think this is a serious mis-step for Microsoft in a peripheral that will already have questionable uptake... they need to get these things out to the majority of people that own a 360, not just a few enthusiasts.

The camera itself might not be that expensive, but I imagine the R&D behind the project was pretty huge. And hardware costs rarely reflect the cost of the component. The price is based on what the consumer is willing to pay. Will they pay $150? Probably. I'd prefer if it was $100-125, but I don't think $150 is too extreme. $175-200 would have been way too much.

What's the cheapest motorised swivel camera currently out there? I think that motor adds to the cost a fair bit.

This is the risk any early adopter takes on. I guess that means you're not so keen to repeat the process?

Well you ARE a mod, im sure you can do many things with that poll to twist it to your satisfaction. :p

Wait and see. If the games are good and my kids (especially my lazy-assed son) like them, I'll buy one.

Could be although how necessary is it really? Trying to recoup the (software) R&D cost on the hardware is a naive strategy though. Like I said, the only way they win with this is if everyone buys one and at the current price with no really compelling products I doubt that will happen. I imagine the people who want the Harmonix dance game will get it just for that but otherwise I doubt there's mass market appeal enough to justify the cost.

The bundled version pricing implies they really are trying to target people without 360s already but how many people are there that don't already have 360s that really would change their mind over this peripheral? I guess we'll see.

That would explain "the one" :p

What do you think they are trying to "win" here?

I would strongly doubt that MS's strategy with Kinect is any different than their strategy with Live on the original xbox.

They're positioning a feature late in the lifecycle of a console to flush it out for the next generation.

GI.biz interviewed Chris Lewis, Microsoft's VP for the Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe....

But to answer your question, will we see more of these hybrid experiences coming, where you can complement what might ostensibly be a controller-based experience with gestures, voice and physical movement? Yes, I think that will come. I think there's an overlap there, a logical and a good one.

Again, without compromising on the experience, making sure it's incremental and generally advantageous to the experience, then you'll see those types of experiences coming over time. And therefore I think all of the different types of gaming experiences you describe will become available over the coming 18 months or so.

Everybody on the net is reading that as you won't see hardcore Kinect games for another 18 months, but if you read exactly what was said that's not exactly the case. You'll see that kind of experience coming OVER the next 18 months. Though it could still directly tie-in with the next gen system if released another 10 months later(Holiday 2012).

Until more core games are shown that interest me, I'm not interested. Based on the software I've seen thus far, I'm not sure what kind of games I'll see that I like for this type of control method. We'll see.

I said I'd be keeping an eye out on deals, and here's one hell of a deal. You can buy the Kinect for around $90 + Tax from Toys-R-Us!
