Killer Instinct [XO]

Also worked on Goldeneye I believe (the Klobb SMG is named after him after all), and also probably, Perfect Dark I seem to recall, but I'm not sure.

What a abominable bastardisation of my childhood.

Looks hideous.

This isn't KI
The guy who cried in the initial video talks about your thoughts, among other things, and he says how the game does compare to the old versions. He seems to be very happy:

E3 Stage demo (not a video of the emotional guy but Gamespot's)

You really want to pay for each fighter individually????
Yes. People who use all the content should not be subsidized by people who only use a little bit of it. I would have loved to buy just five or six fighters for Soul Calibur V, since I barely play that game.

That said, Rare is dead in all but name, so I don't see why it matters who is developing this.

Subsidized  Selling a full game is being subsidized

Anyway unless you also buy the maps, the online features, the UI, the enemy fighters (you dont play only against jago, right?), the AI etc... individually you are already being "subsidized" anyway. The fighters will be a small part in the whole, maybe the bigs part but still small compared to the whole...

On the other side, fighting games are quite probably way overpriced, they still sell at a high price, sell good numbers but certainly cost a lot less to make... Certainly this one at 20€/$ would make a good profit, but not enough for MS.

Looks fun, though I was expecting a much darker, grittier/menacing art style... Something to stand apart from the more cartoony leaps of SFIV or Mortal Kombat.

Funny you mention this because SF always had a cartoon look while MK always had a photo digitized look. From what I remember KI always had a shiny CGI look.

Well, that's true. Although Sabrewulf used to have the glowing eyes, and he was grey/darker (why is he blue now!?). The glowing eyes just add to the feral nature. The hit effects look a bit comical (Jago's a silly light show).

*shrug* I think I just wanted a fighter like this to be more gritty/darker/grounded since cartoony is what everyone else is doing. Oh well. Maybe that'd be too disparate from the crazy combos. :p

It's more nostalgia than anything ground breaking. It's the one fighting game that has never gotten a 2.5 D next generation makeover. Think the last one was made for the N64?

I don't understand why Killer Instinct is such a big deal?

What new innovations did it bring to the fighting genre?

It was a game of its time, obviously built to ride Mortal Kombat's gory wave of popularity. There's not much else to it really. Unless you've played it back then it's gonna look silly you. KI was a button-masher with a weird dial-a-combo system and some exceptionally awful art.

I think the new one looks kinda awful (and decidedly not next-gen) as well to be honest.

I liked KI because it was so easy to get into. Once you are into it, you can take your time to learn the more specialised aspects of the game. I like that in a game. For example, Forza helped ease me into simulation racing game with the assists then as I got better I started turning off the assists.

A bit off topic, so sorry for that, but when it comes to turning off all the assists in racing games I'm always wondering whether you'd actually do that in reality as well? I'm not into racing or cars for that matter, so I've asbolutely no idea. I just have a hard time imagining a professional race driver turning off all that helpful stuff. He's not on the track to prove his mad Skillz. It's his profession. One that forces him to pretty much put his life on the line no less. I'd imagine he'd appreciate all the help.

Everything looks so sparkly...

But that's true of most other fighting games?

Nope. You can't pull of the kind of combos you can do from the get-go in KI in other fighters. The game is heavily reliant on combos so it is easy to pull it off if you are a beginner, yet it is such that when you master the game, you can beat a beginner easily.
