Just bought a 32 GB HP Touchpad...

I highly recommend adding the Preware test feeds so you can install uberkernel and govnah which will allow you to "overclock" to 1.5 GHz (the chip's native speed actually). The latest Xserver package has better virtual keyboard management too. Definitely a tinkertoy.

For videos you have to transcode into a mp4 that the native player can handle (there's a thread on precentral forums) or buy a $7 Kalemsoft Media player which is loads better as it plays just about anything and will stream from your PC if you like too.

Spaz for twitter
Glimpse for all sorts of stuff, very nice app.

etc.

I have preware already with the following items installed:

1) Start the Phone app on the TouchPad, dial ##LOGS#, clear logs and set to minimal logging.

2) Fire up Preware, navigate to Available Other > All and install EOM Overlord Monitoring. This kills the processes that uploads log files to Palm. This also saves on unnecessary bandwidth being consumed without your knowledge.

3) Patches

* Make It So (of course, you need this patch)
* Muffle System Logging
* Remove Dropped Packet Logging
* Unset CFQ IO Scheduler
* Unthrottle Download Manager
* Quiet powerd Messages
* Faster Card Animations HYPER Version
* Increase Touch Sensitivity And Smoothness 10 (this is the 10px version)

4) For extra points, also install the following patches

* Max Blocker (ad and analytics cookies blocker)
* Private Browsing

What else do you recommend? Does the overclock have any drawbacks? How can I get maximum performance out of the web browser?

There's another mod on the browser in the app catalog that has tabs, but loses the private browsing patch. No real downside to overclocking that I've found but YMMV.

I did the oc to 1.5 and used it for a few hours. Everything seemed fine and you can certainly notice it during browsing.

I'll keep an eye on the 1.7 oc kernel while it gets vetted but really I'm good for now.

Depends on what you're looking to do. My iPad2 has been in a drawer for weeks now.

I guess I would love a tablet for a few reasons. mainly controlling the desktop's music player, so I would need a xmms 2 client, a file browser and a NFS client maybe, or use a web interface, I don't know.

it would really be a "slave" device, but mostly for not having to get up and walk a few steps, or allowing a buddy to use the desktop for browsing.
I would also need computer controlled lightswitches to add another use case.

then it could be used for reading books. but surely a 7 inch tablet is better for that.
I'm not in a hurry, maybe a few years from now with 28nm, OLED and $99 as the base price for a cheap chinese clone with those specs.

I just installed the WebOS Quick Install on my PC. I hooked up the Touchpad and pushed Preware to the Touchpad. I am curious though but should I do the 3.0.2 68 update first? I keep connectin to the server but it does not let me download it.

Ah yeah gotcha. I did that and a host of other things and now my touchpad is running at 1.5 ghz. Who knew 300 mhz makes that much of a difference. I can only imagine the 1.7 ghz kernel and how fast that will allow the machine to be!

Yeah. I'll jump on that but I rather let others test it first for a month or 2! 1.5 is fine for now.

Exactly. I was reading the Scorpion cores originally in this thing was supposed to be at 1.5 ghz anyway. That is the stock clock so I am not worried about clocking it back to what it was supposed to be.

So far I am enjoying my experience with the tablet. It however is a bit laggy no doubt even after derestricting the processor. I think it is all down to the software. For example if you swap between chat conversations you expect it to be slick and immediate except the experience is not so. Its a bit hesitant. HP I hope is planning on at least releasing more updates for the os in the future though they are pulling out of the webOS hardware business.

Broke down and slapped the Warthog kernel on the Touchpad and now it's smooth sailing at 1.7 ghz! It really is impressive!

What's funny is a chrooted ubuntu doesn't have the hesitations so it's clearly something in the underlying linux under webOS.

How is Ubuntu working with the touchscreen? I would be very curious to try it out. With that said did you see the Quickoffice update in the HP Catalog? Finally full on editing of documents!

It's a hassle, but you can get easystroke (who thought of that name?) running and the latest Xecutah has good keybindings so that ubuntu works pretty well.

As for QuickOffice, I'll take it, but I'm more excited that Picsel is going to release Smart Office in 45 days.

Nice I didn't know about Smart Office. I am really hoping that HP has the smarts to keep releasing updates to the is and make it more optimized because I personally think with a bit more polish this thing could take off and hold its own against the competition.

They didn't seem to be willing to really push hard with WebOS. And so it never had a chance because MS, Google and Apple are big, capable and not holding back.
