Japan Sales Thread *renamed

Not really. The hypothetical test case was whether people would prefer powerful HD games or the new motion control scheme. Does the 'waggle-market' outnumber the conventional games/entertainment market? Thus if the choice wasn't affected by price and was only 'do you choose waggle games or normal games + media function?' which would win out? That question would tell us the tastes of the Japanese market, and whether or not it has lost faith with normal console gaming and want something new, or if it's just the price that they don't like.

However it wouldnt give a perfect view of the market. The case could very well be that if the ps3 launched at the same price as the wii they would buy it because they all had a ps2 before it, and not because of the gfx. They kind of had a choice now, do I pay less for new controlls or do I pay more for gfx? the obvious result was that they didnt want to pay more for better gfx so even if ps3 launched at the same price I think you can, with the data we have now, say that they wouldnt have bought ps3 with the gfx/media functions as their #1 prioraty.

I just think its a bit lopsided and wouldn't neccesarily tell us anything about new controls vs standard controls. Though I'd think yes PS3 would have sold better then Wii in that impossible scenario. Simply because it would have been an insane offer, one people couldn't turn down. A console that follows on from PS2 and costs $800 to make (or so) at an affordable $250..

Similarly had Wii released with graphics as good as PS3 with everything else the same (including the price difference between Wii and PS3) I'm sure Wii would have slaughtered PS3 even more then it has.

Hard to discuss market without considering price; price encapsulates so much information. Anyway, shouldn't auction prices of the Wii v. PS3 provide some insight?

Indeed, people are also more willing trying new concepts if the amount of money at risk is low. Nintendo probably hit the sweetspot with the price of the wii, considering it features.

The Wii had a monster week, 6 games in the top 10. And 9 in the top 30. Wii Fit & holiday boost, I guess. I think this is its biggest selling non-launch week.

There seems to be a Wii/DS Tsunami around the world. I am sure even N didn't dream in their wildest dreams that things would turn out like this. N should have outsourced Wii production (do they produce (Wii/DS) themselves?).

PSP is continuing to have amazing hardware numbers, it seems many are using it primarily as a media device.

PS3 is doing quite well (but Wii nos make it look bad).
