Such numbers are deceptive when they're reported to far more signifcant figures than can accurately be measured. Neither of them are "wrong."

Didnt PSP outsell DS in Japan recently also?

Nintendo will probably plow through Sony on the holidays but if Sony sales can close the gap every month, thats good news for them

Looks like the PS3 has outsold the Wii for the last two weeks and is catching up in sales in Europe. It also appears to be outselling the 360 apart from in America.

Sorry to be the devil's advocate, but is the Japan market really so important as to spawn these kinds of discussion threads? According to the site that shall not be named, Japan sold only 4k more consoles than the UK last week. Does anyone hold the UK as a crucial or representative market? If not, then why Japan? Japan is handheld land. Sony's overall success won't come on the back of such a small console market.

So what do we do then, ignore every other market and only go on the US numbers, then in a few years start wondering why PS3 games are selling 10 million copies despite the fact there's only 5 or 6 million consoles sold

Japan may not be the biggest market, but all markets count. of the ~120m+ PS2's sold, over 20m were sold in Japan.

i do agree that this isn't that significant in the big picture. Sony is going to have to at least make up some ground in NA if they want to beat MS let alone Nintendo. i think whats important for Sony is to not trail too far behind this holiday season so well see how they do in November/December. 2008 is when Sony will have a breakout year imo.

I also believe Japan to be a moot point. It has to be when two thirds of the development community (North American & European) can't expect to sell because of xenophobic purchasing habits.

Never thought I'd see an American ever say that.

rewind 15~20 years and I bet that's exactly what Toyota were saying.

What north american titles have sold well in Japan? I can't really think of any...

It's beside the point though. Japan is important. However, not because you might sell 10 or 15million consoles there, or because it's a great market for western publishers. It's because they have so many great developers.

Success in Japan means more support from Japanese developers, and that's what is integral about Japan. Especially for Sony in it's ongoing battle with MS. If they want to maintain their traditional exclusives, they need strong japanese sales.

Since MS is the obvious example here, do you think that the 360 is hurting for Japanese devs? I'm no expert on all of the dev houses in Japan, but it seems to me that the major Japanese devs have already given the 360 attention proportional to its worldwide sales, not its Japan sales. Most of PS3 and Wii's strong titles from Japan are first party, and therefore independent of Japanese sales. I guess I'm just skeptical about how big a difference Japanese sales make, since it seems as if the Japanese devs are already prioritizing consoles by their U.S. marketshare.
