Japan Sales Thread *renamed

PSP is continuing to have amazing hardware numbers, it seems many are using it primarily as a media device.
Isn't Sony going down the same road (media device) with the PS3? The PSP has great hardware numbers but only 1 game in the top 30. That's the same number as the dead-in-Japan-xbox360.

This may be a silly question but... how big is Christmas spending/gift giving in Japan? I can imagine many DS's in stocking this year.

If I remember correctly, there isn't any. Instead, most Japanese get a bonus at the end of the year that they typically spend during January. I'm sure someone here more knowledgeable / Japanese can confirm this.

Christmas is getting sort of bigger in Japan, but mostly in the sense of an imported tradition, i.e. decoration, etc. but it's not the time for giving big gifts, etc. Also it's often more of a couple's evening, i.e. eating out and staying in a fancy hotel, a bit like valentine's day in winter so to speak.

There's also the tradition of Oseibo (year end gifts) during December which are usually given to people you feel obliged to (boss, business partners, people who helped you, etc.). But that is usually restricted to a certain gift category (food, liquor, etc.).

I think you guys are actually missing the most incredible thing on that list: Mario Kart. Holy hell, how long has the game been out? It's still in the top 20 list!!! That's crazy! Looks like Galaxy has legs despite the slow start. It's climbing back up the charts and could very well display the same kind of momentum as NSM and Mario Kart DS.

PSP sales more than doubled...astonishing!

Pretty impressive PSP and Wii numbers! NDS going strong as usual, but with a fair bit of competition. PS3 back up also.

Pretty much nintedomination again, also lower down the list. Wii fit seems to have legs and SMG seems to start selling better after its not so good start. Could it be that nintendo started a new add campain to show how the game is like?

Yeah Incredible feat by DS though it is not fair to compare PS2 to it, as it is like comparing landline phone instruments with cellphones.

Ah that argument again... I think it's fair to compare. They're both gaming consoles. The PS2 has been on the market for over four years longer and has had several price cuts. The PS2 has been about as cheap as DS for a while now. The PS2 has a much richer game library. The PS2 followed the immensely popular Playstation and inherited all its predecessor's games in backward compatibility. In the face of all those facts it's quite a feat in how fast the DS overtook it.

One is handheld, the other is not, and generally their games are judged differently, developers have a different approach on handhelds when designing games, people tend to buy different games, they play them on different occasions, and the devices have different life cycles. The arguement that PS2 has had its fair share of price cuts doesnt stand, because consoles when are released are more expensive than a handheld that just launched, and until they reach their lowest price point that is comparable to a handheld, they have already reached their last years of their life cycle. They are nearly obsolete.

Consoles compete each other, thats why they are released at similar periods, while handhelds do not take as much into consideration any competition from the consoles and may be released at any time according to the competition in the handheld market

So now let's look at it in comparison to the Gameboy. A comparison that people will find more fair and impressive. The DS is 'only' about 11mil away from catching up to Gameboy's 32mil sales there and the Gameboy probably had the longest lifespan of any gaming console and two major wow factor revisions(Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Color).

Gameboy release 1989(with the last game released in 2002) - sales in Japan 32.47mil
Nintendo DS release 2004 - sales in Japan 21mil

Yeah indeed. DS is doing awesomely great. I can only imagine how many sales it will reach in total until it is replaced by another. I am sure it will surpass by more than double or trible (and even this could be a huge understatement!) the sales of the Gameboy.

Triple that of the gameboy? that seems like a awfull lot, maybe if they keep it around very long without a DS2 or something like that. Though that might happen as PSP isnt a threat, HW and SW sells like crazy in every continent and there doesnt seem to be another competitor coming anytime soon if ever.

How is the price of the DS doing btw? its still pretty much 150 euro's in most stores around here (original launch price). Depending on the store you might get it at around 130 euro's. Also software is still pretty expensive at 40+ euro's for alot of games.
