Do I read this correct? The WII has been already buyed half the amount of the Gamecube? And this after only ~ 6 months? If true...WOW³

I know it's a bit off topic but my Sunday paper's Best Buy pull-out finally advertised the Wii, for the first time AFAIK since the first month of release. I was excited thought I had a shot and went to the store 30 minutes after opening. They were all gone, the first shipment this store - USA's largest electronics store - received in a month. Sheeesh...

Reading that Nintendo is working on getting production up to 1.5 million per month makes me appreciate how limited their production really is. I mean, that should mean that right now they have equal to or less than the production capacity of the PS3 (estimated at 1-1.2 million per month).

I guess they must have been really conservative in their estimate of demand, or just planned it this way (as I suppose it does allow them to make even more money, allowing them to keep the price at this level longer, with components typically getting cheaper each month)

No recent console has ever been manufactured as much and sold as well as the Wii during its five first months. They have shipped (and probably sold) at least 6 millions at the end of March.

I woulnd't say really conservative as those numbers are quite big, the demand just is so huge at the moment that it might seem like that. Looking at these production numbers I would say it's more fair to say that Sonys estimates were ridiculously high compared to demand and that their production cabacity is currently oversized by a very large margin.

yes i believe its simply the runaway success of the wii is far more than anyone (including nintendo themselves) guessed, after all unlike the deep pockets of sony + ms they cant afford to have unsold consoles lying in a warehouse somewhere

Nintendo has deep pockets too, not as big as MS but its not like they are poor and cant invest a large amount of money. Didnt they had something like 8billion on the bank? They could run the xbox division for a decade with that ;) But I dont think consoles laying on the shelves is such a big problem, after all, nintendo already sold them at that point.

true the DS is doing amazing but to say it comes close to the ps2 aint right
ps2 = 100+million
ds < 50million
(true different time periods but who knows perhaps the ds market will die in a year )

But how many of those PS2 are fully functional PS2s sitting in people's homes? Ok, it's impossible to really tell, but you know at very least some of the 100 million belong to people who bought the system 2-3 times cause it broke. Of course people also own multiple DS's because someone in the family is hogging the damn thing and you can't play.

I bought 7 DSes myself. 2 (DSFat followed by Lite) for myself, wife and daughter, and one DSLite for my mother. That would send tie ratio down the drain if I didn't own around 80 games for the little bugger (not counting wife's games and daughter's games).

Data for April 16th through 22nd is now available at NeoGAF. Software only for now. Hardware sales data is expected tomorrow, but a few people are teasing/speculating.

Another week and another ass whuppin by Nintendo. All hail!

Holy cow! Wii to PS3 is 7:1. That's the highest since launch.

I found this chart by a gaf member to be interesting. For the first 20 some odd weeks after launch in Japan, the Wii is trending along with the PS2, while the PS3 has actually fallen behind the Gamecube's pace.

These have to be some scary numbers for sony. The Wii is outselling the PS3 freaking 7 to 1 the DS i outselling the PSP by almost 6 to 1.

Add up the Wii and the DSL and they outsold every other console combined 4.5 to 1. Nintendo really really knows the japanese market.

Here are some more in depth numbers by JoshuaJSlon at GaF.

Wii comparisons: At 21 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 83.3 weeks (April 14, 2003), DS was at 21.0 weeks (April 23, 2005), where PS2 was at 18.9 weeks (July 8, 2000), and where PSP was at 51.3 weeks (November 29, 2005).

PS3 comparisons: At 24 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 2.9 weeks (March 18, 2000), where PSP was at 10.1 weeks (February 13, 2005), where GCN was at 15.4 weeks (December 25, 2001), and where Wii was at 4.3 weeks (December 25, 2006).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares were 12.4 / 87.7, Wii besting last week's percentage of 86.4 but still slightly below launch week's 91.8. LTD shares are now 28.1 / 71.9. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this rate, it would catch up in 119.9 weeks (August 8, 2009). If "the flip" occurred, the systems would meet up in 19.7 weeks (September 6, 2007).
(Now Wii has done 600% more than PS3.)

PS2 vs DS: At this week's rates, PS2 and DS totals meet in 25.5 weeks (October 17, 2007) at 20.7 million units apiece.

And  at the Xbox 360 numbers. Question for anyone in the know: does Microsoft talk about Xbox Live Arcade at all in Japan? Perhaps I'm overestimating the impact this is having on the market, but I'm seeing some fabulous "casual" games being released here in the states that I would think would resonate well with the Japanese market. Then again, I don't know that they play up Xbox Live Arcade here either...

This is actually better than last year (I think it was under 2k a week at this point).
