It's July 24, 2003 and all is well with Cell so far...

To keep a project of that scale and complexity on track is quite an achievement, this is going to be interesting ...

It is also easier as well to fend off forum trolls

Oh come on, thats the fun of it! It's like the 'safe' sex alternative to leather and whips.

You got a point there buddy, I am sure Deadmeat will come up with better trolling that will still require good effort to fend off :)

Does anyone know how many units (cell's) they will require for PS3 launch? and the planned capacity of the Cell Fabs? Presumably they will need a few months worth of production before PS3 can launch. Also will PS3 be the first Cell product?

Hopefully PS3 will not be the first CELL-based product. perhaps there will be a few in late 2004 or early 2005 with less complex versions of CELL, to test the waters. although, not being inside Sony, I have no way of knowing what will be the first Cell product.

The first Cell-based product IMO SHOULD have been PSP, the Patent outlayed a handheld configuration for Cell.

But anyway, we will see experimental products in 2004 no doubt, each showing off Cell features.

Oita #2 65 nm lines for Cell with 300 mm Wafers should be mass-producing ( early production should start in mid-late January 2004 ) 65 nm chips by the end of Q2 2004 and not too long after that we should have mass-production starting in Nagasaki #2.

I hope Sony includes dedicated AC3/DTS encoding hardware (like the Xbox) rather than to leave it up to developers to implement it in software. I think most Xbox w/DD5.1 owners will testify that they can never go back.

Well, the psp(easy to develop for.) appears to be even more powerful in that area than the xbox, so... ps3 could very well have one of the most powerful sound processors in any market... and yeah, the sound area will very likely be easy to dev. for...

Well PS2's specs were being locked down in 97, and IGN reported at E3 some developer got a hold of the PS3 specs to base a few games off of. Now I'm sure NOTHING is final yet, however the rough specs they are going to build around are probably being decided.

yeah, that seems perfectly reasonable to me.

probably, PS3 specs will be locked down late this year, or early 2004.

The CPU is probably closer to being locked down, if it has not already.

So I am really speaking about the GPU being locked down by early 2004. Then of course, is the rest of the PS3 console. the amount of memory, the speed of the disc drive (Blu-Ray most likely) etc.

And were did you get that idea?

Will DX9 -> DX10 be about like DX7 -> DX8, ie quite a good jump is 3D graphics(heard that is something to look for). If so, i hope Sony dont tie down PS3 GPU that soon...at THE earliest end 2004... else it might be PS2 GS all over again...

I think XB2 will be DX10+ compliant...yeay?

Is PS3 going to use DX10 :?
Otherwise I don't see the point in your post, especially when viewed in context of the topic of this thread and previous postings in this thread, which neither even hint at xbox2 or Direct X...

Well, not exactly following DX revisions... i mean.. more like a referance or an additional page from a book to leaf em up... yeay get what i mean? :p

I dont know, its not about Xbox2, but like Sony shouldnt tie down the GPU too soon...who knows what advanced speedy rendering features might pop up in 6mths time.

Oh, now I get it. Sony should wait and see what new features MS will invent for DirectX10, and learn from it.
That would be very very wise of Sony, to wait until DirectX10 before they even think about the features of their new 'GS'.
MS must be the absolute leader in 3D graphics, no-one but MS knows what will be the tricks of future 3D rendering, so everybody should just abandon everything they were designing and just wait for teh next 3D graphiXX bible that is to be the DirectX10 feature list!

No need to get heaty heaty. Not saying MS are king of 3D, just that i think Sony will do well to have as advanced GPU as possible(PS3 is gonna be till 2010+, unless its a flop.. :p ). More time helps. We have seen the lacklasture GS, i hope PS3 will not be a repeat again. TFloppy CELL CPU + kickass CELL CPU =

I love my new and upcoming PS3! Cant wait for it! :)
