The socks really are an Estonian tradition, not scandinavian, I only read about it some years ago.

My ultimate cure:
Any kind of 40%-up alc (I prefer Vodka), lots of sugar. Make it really hot and drink it while it's hot.
Not the whole bottle, of course. Anything between 100-250 ml will do it. If you drink more, the stuff itself will make you sick

I recall reading that alcoholics have half the incidence of colds than do non alcoholics. Furthermore when they do get colds, they tend to be less severe. No, I'm serious. It helps because you'll sweat the whole night and it kinda washes all the crap out of your body. It is really helpfull if it's only a cold and not flu (which IS a virus, while cold isn't).
