G4 makes some very legitimate points concerning Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony clearly had the best showing - an opinion you'll hear die-hard Xbox and Nintendo fans bemoaning all over the internet. And soon you'll see it in the gaming press as well.
P.S. It wasn't just G4 people on that show, either. They had a guy from IGN and some other fella, too.
Oh they had a great show, no doubt. But have no US launch frame, price, and no idea of the quality we will be seeing in game. The final point is an important one. Minus UT2007 (same quality as Gears, same engine also) we were only left with a fuzzy feeling of "it could".
MS went about things the wrong way for the hard core gamer, and PDZ is no where in sight. But that said, all is not lost and it has not been a flop. They just got out "showed", but here are some pros from MS:
-Xbox Live = the real deal.
-MS has a ton of support from developers
+6 EA launch titles, 25 in the works (this is great news for MS in the US)
+40 launch titles
+Close to 200 games in development
+Square Enix supplying FF XI and a new FF type game
-MS best looking games (PGR3, Gears of War, Ghost Recon 3, etc...) were on par with anything Sony shows.
-The Xbox 360 is powerful and well balanced (HDD, comparable GPU it appears, nice CPU--not as much floating point but definately has a bit and it has 3 PPC cores and should do a lot of game logic and integer well)
-Halo will debut with PS3 launch
I think MS biggest mistakes were:
-Stupid hip hop image
-Never should have focused on PDZ in its early state
-Should have only showed the killer apps
-Should have weeded out all the stuff that did not look next gen and should have showed CGI instead (e.g. DoA4 CGI instead of DoA4 footage)
-Should have done some technical demos
-Should have focused on the massive support; even mention how many launch titles their competitors had in the past--THEN show CGI of what they will have
-And finally--they needed to win over an exclusive (and I thought losing epic was bad form for this E3... not a big deal UE3 is on PS3, but that should have waited for after E3)
Overall MS showed a lot of pluses. But Sony out did them with demos, promises, and CGI. Sony really had a better presentation. Heck, Nintendo's Reggie is a better talker than anyone MS has. At least he gets you excited.
