IGN's Top Ten Best-Looking GameCube Games

Yeah, the omission of Rebel Strike (considering they included Rogue Leader) is just strange.

Then again, did RS really improve on the art direction.. or just the technical aspects of RL?

Pure graphical prowess isn't what IGN was looking at, as they made obvious with their choice to put Wind Waker up there. Not that Wind Waker isn't pushing the hardware a little.. :)
Well, I don't think the Endor forests have ever looked as good in any other game. That, and the post processing effects should give Rebel Strike a leg up over Rogue Leader, artistically.

If you guys had seen RE4 running through progressive on a good TV, you'd understand why it wasn't #1 :p

It looks awful! Dithering and jaggies everywhere. You can really see where they cut the corners to make it look good on a "bad" (i.e. regular) TV.

It's looks fine on my 19" .25 dot pitch CAD CRT using the progressive component to VGA cable....at 3 feet.

Go ahead and name some GCN title that you think looks good and I'll see if I can load the game on my GCN to compare it on my monitor. ;)

I have both MP and RE4 and RE4 looks better than MP from a graphics complexity POV, however, MP has a cleaner video output. Some games on GCN have a clean output others have a more soft output. RE4 has a soft output as well as the Rogue Squadron games. Eternal Darkness and FZERO GX has a very clean output.

Really? It looks fine? You can't see the dithering or jaggies?

I ran it at 480p component on my 36" CRT Toshiba hi-def TV and it looked like arse. Even my mate who'd brought it over (and is a massive RE4 fanboy, he loves it) agreed it looked awful. All these flaws with the game, which weren't apparently on his 32" Loewe, suddenly stood out as clear as day. It instantly lost its lustre for me. When I first saw it on his TV, it looked fooking amazing!!!

As for which GC games look better.. well.. I haven't actually played that much on my Cube, because there ain't that much to play compared to other consoles ;) But what I HAVE seen does look great, especially for the specs. RE4 is the only game I've played through prog scan from Gamecube though, so maybe other games show up flaws (that XBox games don't) when run through a nice connection.

Personally I'll never get over seeing HL2 and Doom 3 running at 720p through my TV running from my X800 Pro at a silky smooth 60fps... stunnnnnnning, the next gen should look amazing :D

MP is running at a buttery 60fps. I agree with em.

EDIT:

Oh, and just for fun. These graphics scores are from thier reviews of Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4.

Metroid Prime
9.0 Graphics
A stunning art vision that deserves major recognition, jaw-dropping world architecture, and volumes of pretty textures. At 60 fps with progressive scan support, there are few that compare.

Resident Evil 4
9.5 Graphics
Superb. Unequaled art. Technically in a league of its own. Gorgeous character models, environments, animation, lighting and texture effects. GameCube's prettiest title. Faked widescreen hurts.

Are you sure your tv can do 720p, because I have understood that there aren't any crt tv's that can show it?.

Most will upconvert to 1080i. The others just don't support 720p at all (though some Mitsubishis will receive the signal with the addition of a rare $1000 modification).

Yes that's how i thought it was. Are those CRt tv's really cabable of displaying 1920x1080 or do they loose some of the information?. I would like to see how upconverting 720p to 1080i differ from real 720p.

Yeah but MP2 is running at the same framerate and looks better..

That's cool, I haven't played that one yet. Still, it's funny that thier RE4 graphics score is higher, but MP gets number one heh.

It loses information in that it can't precisely resolve every pixel, but it's like a 19" monitor running 1600x1200 - although it's not precisely resolved, it still looks a lot better than 1280x960.

1080i & 720p look much much much better than 480p. 576p looks pretty good though :)

The best resolution for most RP CRT HDTVs is 1776x1000, if you're outputting from a PC. That's the best non-custom resolution to minimize cropping from overscan. But my Toshiba still crops off pixels from the left side, so if I were to set a custom resolution, it would be around 1700x1000. When I run at 1280x720, overscan is less of an issue, though the image scales to fit the whole screen.
